2011 Race Report
A Stroll in Central Park 12-Hour Endurance Run
February 12, 2011
Theres nothing better than a timed event for showing runners what they can accomplish. Many of the 40 runners who participated in the inaugural A Stroll in Central Park 12-Hour Endurance Run completed their longest run to date on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at the event. Many completed their first ultra distance at the same time. Twenty eight participants completed distances of over 30 miles.
And the course record will be tough to crack at future Strolls. Drew Burnett, 29, completed more than 80 miles in the 12 hour time period to win first place.
"I am fairly new to the sport, having completed three previous ultras and a handful of trail marathons in the past couple years." Burnett said. "This race came in training for the GRR 100 miler which will be the first of this distance. Pine Mountain 40 miler was the furthest race until now, although I do a lot of training runs over 40-50 miles. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to break into this distance in a low key environment!"
First female, Ashley Welch, 24, completed more than 70 miles in the time period. Ashley completed her first 100 miler at the Bartram Forest 100s in December.
Bobby Lewellen tied Welch for the second overall with 70 miles. John Obst was third with 69 miles.
Deidra Rudder of Strawberry Plains, Tenn. had run only a half marathon before she traveled to North Georgia to join her friend Tallie Lewellen at The Stroll. Both runners had a great day and Deidra just pasted the marathon distance to completed 41.2 miles in 12 hours.
Every participant who completed 13 miles or more received an engraved plaque with their name and number of miles completed. The first female and male winners received a $50 gift card to the Big Peach running store.
After several weeks of atypical cold and snowy weather in North Georgia, the sun came out and temperatures warmed into the mid 50s just in time for race day. The event, sponsored by FeetGeek,(www.feetgeek.com) a technical running shoe insole supplier, took place on a 1.03 mile asphalt path within Central Park in Forsyth County, GA.
Volunteers associated with Windward Road Runners running club kept the single aid station stocked with grilled cheese sandwiches, potatoes, bananas, Moon Pies, candy and snacks of all description. The aid station fare drew many positive comments from the participants like Welsch who commented, This was my favorite ultra aid station ever!
Several seasoned ultra runners came to the event prepared with their own preferred supplies. They were pleased to be able to park their cars directly next to the course. Both a convenient aid station and the close proximity to parked cars facilitated fast running times.
