Andover Early Special Education Program

Andover Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) is designed for children 3 to 5 years of age who qualify for services in areas such as communicating, learning, hearing, seeing, moving, or socializing as well as peer models who assist with child with special needs.

If you have concerns with your child in areas of cognition, motor, social, behaviors, adaptive/self help or speech skills the first step is to have your child attend a Count Your Child In screening (CYKI). ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

What are the hours and days of school? The ECSE programs are Monday through Thursday and meet in half-day sessions. AM classroom: 8:35 AM to 11:35 AM PM classroom: 12:35 PM to 3:35 PM We follow the Andover District calendar What curriculum and learning strategies do we use? We utilize many approaches to assist in young learners education. Here are some that your child will benefit while in our classrooms:  Houghton Mifflin curriculum Hand Writing Without Tears Everyday Math  A variety of social and play strategies  Theme based practices  Autism training  Positive discipline programs and de-escalation of behavior supports On going training and support for our staff are part of our daily routine, so there are many more approaches that we utilize based on the activity or situation. What are the teacher's qualifications? Classroom teachers have college degrees and are licensed by the State Department of Education and receive ongoing training. Para-educators assist teachers in each classroom giving the children who attend the our program individualized support and instruction. What makes us work? Our Curriculum (Houghton Mifflin) in the Early Childhood Program is standards-based and aligns with the Andover Kindergarten program, thus creating a smooth transition for our students into their elementary school. The small student to teacher ratio in our program ensures success for every student. We enroll peer models in our program to assist with typical developement and the inclusion model. Andover is a renown and respected community. We help prepare children for kindergarten and for life, through activities that help them learn language, math, science, dexterity, expression, imagination and social skills.

PROCESS: * Peer models are selected by a lottery system and are screened prior to selection. * Lottery drawing will be on Friday, March 9, 2012 Each child drawn will be screened to ensure that the child demonstrates normal” developmental milestones. *Screening will be Friday, March 30th, 2012from 9 AM to 11 AM. Our final selection of peer models which is based on observation and results of the screening, will be mailed on Friday, April 13th, 2012.

QUALIFICATIONS: *The child must reside in the Andover School District or have a parent that is employed by the district. *Parents of peer model students are responsible for their child’s transportation to and from the school or may contact the Transportation Department to arrange transportation. *Your child must be three years, six months by September 1, 2011 and be potty trained to qualify. * Child must pass the screening in areas of: language, pre-academics, social, self-help, fine motor, and gross motor.
