Meet the Counseling Team!

Ms. Dahlin-This is my second year at Mission! I am a graduate of Montana StateUniversity-Northern and received my Master's of Education with a focus in School Counseling at Montana StateUniversity- Go BOBCATS! I am originally from Newport, Washington but consider Montana to be my home. I'm excited about all the good things that are happening here in MissionSchools and feel honored to be a part of this community! Mr. Pule-I am excited that St. Ignatius Schools will have the benefit of GEAR UP 2018There are many benefits for studentsthat attend a GEAR UP School andsince 2001, the students in St. Ignatiushave received many financial awards and multiple national recognitions through the program. GEAR UP will continue to servethe post-secondary preparation needs ofall students in grades 7-12. College is possible for all Montana students!The Interns-Alisa HartI am currently getting my Master's Degree in School Counseling from the Universityof Montana. I grew up in Moscow, Idahoand graduated from the university of Idaho with degrees in Psychology and Sociology. I am diong my internship here at St. Ignatius for the 2011-12 school year. In my free time I enjoy traveling, sports, outdoor activities and reading. Umut Arslan-I am from Turkey! I have a PsychologicalCounseling and Guidance Bachelor's Degree from Dokuz Eylul University in Turkey. I am also studying School Counseling at the University of Montana. It is my third year in the United States. I used to live in New York and I live in Missoula now. I used to work in several organizations, foundations and schools as a counselor. I am doing my internship in St. Ignatius schools for the 2011-12 school year. I love working with students and studying about schoo life.

What is it exactly that a school counselor does?

ST. IGNATIUS HIGH SCHOOL GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING PROGRAMThe goal of the guidance and counseling department is to support students’ academic and career planning as well as provide social and emotional support. The guidance and counseling department strives to support the educational mission of the district to aid each student in fulfilling their individual potential. Counselors provide information and support to assist students in making informed decisions about their post-secondary options.Counselors are available to students and caregivers to assist in any problems or challenges that students may be facing in school or beyond. School counselors also work in collaboration with teachers, administrators, and the academic dean to help understand the whole student and support them in their academic and personal pursuits.Counselors honor the privilege of confidentiality and will always encourage a strong line of communication between the student, their parents, teachers, and other people of importance in their life.Counseling sessions will remain confidential except when certain legal restrictions arise and confidentiality cannot be maintained. These cases include:1. Any form of child abuse (neglect, physical, and/or sexual)2. Danger to one’s self (suicide)3. Danger to others (homicide, threat to injure someone)
COUNSELING SERVICES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:1. Individual student academic planning and post-secondary readiness2. Interpreting cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests3. Assistance to students struggling with social and emotional issues4. Collaborating with teachers to present guidance curriculum lessons5. Interpreting student records6. Ensuring that student records are maintained as per state and federal regulations7. Working with students to provide small and large group counseling services8. Advocating for students at individual education plan meetings, student support teams, and school attendance review boards9.
