Kirkton Woodland is situated immediately adjacent to Lochcarron village in Wester Ross. The 93 Hectare woodland sits in a prominent position in terms of landscape and forms a backfrop to the village. The history of the community's involvement in the potential community acquisition of Kirkton Woodland was initially triggered by the decision by Forestry Commission, Scotland to sell the woodland around 2000/2001. Due to difficulties with access there was little interest shown and the community began to look at the potential for community acquisition.
In 2009, Kirkton Woodland and Heritage Group (KWHG) was formed to revitalise the community and to ensure its long-erm economic, social, cultural and environmental sustainability.
Our aims are to manage community land assests, advance environmental and cultural knowledge whilst encouraging good practice and to promote enterprise and skills through education, whilst safeguarding the area for future generations.
The structure of KWHG is in accordance with the Community Right to Buy provisons of the Land Reform Act.
Opening up the woodland to amenity and leisure would bring about a much needed facility for locals and visitors, also the close proximity of the primary school to the woodland would provide great opportunity and scope to tap into the forest schools initiative.
