Why Now?

“Why now?” – A question that comes up frequently as of late, especially for first-time candidates like me. The idea is that because we didn’t speak out during the last administration – or any other administration before for that matter – our words are of less force, meaning or importance today. Interestingly, I did speak up then, and learned some very valuable lessons in the process.
“Why now?” – Because right now, people are taking time to learn, to care, to become active on the local level. Individuals crave change – not for change’s sake – but change that will bring innovation, fiscal accountability and real focus on their needs.
Don’t rest on the decades of predictable, outdated and “set in your ways” influence passing as leadership. Change the question from “Why now?” to “Why have we waited so long?” and be a part of securing a future worth leaving to your children and your children’s children.

About Laura
I'm not new to the study of constitutional principles and good government. That enthusiasm increased as I served as an AmeriCorps volunteer right here in Rutherford County when I took an Oath of Office to "... support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." Circuit Courts have a fabled history in the United States of America and while the judges no longer "ride the circuit," the Circuit Court Clerk assures the reliable administration of the clerical process associated with sound judicial practice.
My various roles as administrator, trainer and recruiter over 20+ years in Corporate America, small business and non-profits have helped me understand how to innovate, support change, and be fiscally accountable to others. As a wife, mom of three, and church youth leader, I am passionate about the changes that are taking place in our nation today and, in some cases, that seem to be ignored in the hope that the difficult choices won't have to be made.
Rutherford County, like our nation, is facing tough times that will likely get worse before getting better. Overspending, irresponsible fiscal policies and local leaders' inability (or is it denial) to reform our county government combined with ever increasing dependence on State and Federal dollars means that we WILL need to make sacrifices -- just like the typical Rutherford County family already has.
The coming years need a RESTORATION of fiscally conservative, principled ideas and approaches that NEW leadership can and will provide. Conservatives, working together, are committed to addressing our challenges without burdening the already bent and breaking backs of the citizens of Rutherford County.
We've waited for a long time for the generations of local leaders to step up to the challenge to lead and prepare us for the future. They haven't! Their inaction borrows against our childrens' and grandchildrens' tomorrows.
Join me in restoring our families future through principled conservative leadership.
The Issues
Rutherford County is closing in on $600 million of debt. How could we, the people of this county, let things get so out of control? I think we just trusted our elected officials, on all levels, to have the same principled, careful focus with our resources as we do in our families. We were wrong.
Decades of predictable, outdated and “lackadaisically entrenched” influence have passed as leadership in so many of the departments within Rutherford County government. Now, as I run for the venerable office of Circuit Court Clerk, people ask, “What is that?” or “Oh, yeah, that’s where I get my tags and registration.” (No, that’s the County Clerk.) If they have any idea what the Circuit Court Clerk does, then the next statement is, “Wow, I didn’t know that was an elected position?”
The incumbent has had 16 years to help us, the people of Rutherford County, understand what the Circuit Court Clerk is and its importance to county government. No one has said she is doing a bad job – partly because so few even know what the job entails. As a public servant in a constitutionally defined position, she has missed her opportunity to help us understand, be aware of and support her in any efforts to move into the 21st Century.
The questions that I have … and will answer over the next few months … fall in three categories:
Leadership through Innovation (Efficiency)
What kind of technology is available to help serve the legal community more efficiently? Are we using it here in Rutherford County? If not, why not? How can technology advances be shared with other departments to create efficiency?
Focused Fiscal Accountability (Transparency)
What are the statistics for costs in the courts? What is turned over on a monthly and annual basis to our County General Funds? How effective are our collection efforts? Does the company providing collection services report monthly, quarterly? What performance standards are they evaluated on or held to?
Passionate Public Service (Accessibility)
How does the Circuit Court Clerk’s office affect the public in general? What are their internal customer service measurements? How does an individual access the Clerk’s office? Is it easy to navigate through the “system”?
Join me on the journey to find the answers. It may not be easy, but holding elected officials accountable, never is. I promise as we move forward through the next serveral months, to bring you the answers ... and perhaps the incumbent will even help. (But will the people think it is too little, too late?)
