I have been painting with my father since the about 1996. I attribute my love for art to him. He encouraged me to pursue my passion and go to art school. While in school, I furthered my knowledge of painting, but also gained a new knowledge base in graphic design, ceramics, and photography. I now have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from The University of North Carolina -Wilmington. I am currently living in an adorable apartment in downtown Wilmington, but I am looking forward to moving and finding a new adventure soon!
My art is a representation of things that are often overlooked. I find beauty in rusting handrails and old, forgotten walls. I am drawn to paint and photograph decaying things, things with interesting textures, and “urban” environments. I aim to give the under-appreciated a new life in my painting and photography. Much of my abstract photography is taken in the downtown Wilmington area and my paintings are inspired by these photos. I want to make people notice the unremarkable things and take a closer look at something they have overlooked. My palette consists of earth tones, which I have always been drawn to. These colors seem to be the most basic and simple. They seem to be untouched, in the raw. I think it goes back to my fascination with things that many consider unattractive. I use paint mediums, such as pumice gel and molding paste, to add texture and depth.
I found an affinity for the palette knife in my latest paintings. It is a tool that makes it easier way to spread paint on the canvas and has the added benefit of texture. Because the strokes are somewhat unpredictable, my work looks spontaneous and full of energy. When I started the art program at UNCW, I was very detail-oriented and methodical in my paintings, but I have begun to paint more loosely. My creative process became much less organized. Now, I begin paintings without knowing the final outcome. I find that this approach has given me a new openness and flexibility that I didn’t have before. I have begun to value the journey as much as the destination.
