Lanett’ boys are building a track and field dynasty.
The Panthers won their second consecutive Class 2A title Saturday, scoring 101.50 points to beat Altamont by 5.5 points and rival LaFayette by 8.5 points on the campus of Birmingham Southern.
LaFayette led by 3 points with three events to go, but Lanett came on strong at the end, capping back-to-back titles by winning the meet’s final event — the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:30.48.
Lanett’s Cameron Trammell took home his second state title of the meet Saturday, as he won the 200m with a time of 22.63. Trammell won the 400m on Friday.
LaFayette’s Emmanuel Higgins was also a two-event champion, as he took home gold in the triple jump with a mark of 41-06 on Saturday. Higgins won the state title in the long jump Friday.
The LaFayette and Lanett boys 4x100m relay teams finished first and third respectively in the event finals, with the Bulldogs’ crew clocking a time of 44.03, almost 2 seconds ahead of the Panthers’ time of 45.07.
In the 2A girls competition, LaFayette’s Tyronica Shaver won the long jump, leaping 16 feet, 6.75 inches. Bulldogs teammates Valexia Whitlow and Lauren Moody finished 1-2 in the 200m race, with Whitlow winning the state title with a time of 26.18 seconds. Moody was just behind with a 26.77.
Matekia Marbury won the girls shotput for LaFayette with a throw of 36-07.50.
The LaFayette girls finished third overall in the team competition.
