Questions
Questions for my Patients:
Are you exercising? (Please say yes, please say yes!). You should be exercising a minimum of 30 minutes five days a week. Remember, walking and swimming count.
Are you eating healthfully? Ask me for a heart healthy handout.
Have you had your yearly physical? Women, if you have had a hysterectomy, you still need a yearly physical with a bimanual exam.
Have you had your mammogram? Should be done yearly. Baseline mammogram at age 35 then yearly starting at age 40.
Have you had your prostate checked? Should be done yearly with a blood test and digital rectal exam.
Have you had your colonoscopy? Recommended at age 50 for colon cancer screening. Should get it done earlier if a family history of colon cancer or if any changes in bowel movements.
Have you had your pneumovax (pneumonia shot)? Should get it at age 65. Need to get it earlier if you have heart disease, diabetes, or any other major medical problem. It protexts you against the most serious type of pneumonia.
Have you had a tetanus shot within the past ten years? Ask me for one if you haven't.
There may be other things you need done if you have a family history of certain cancers or other medical problems. Ask me.
Eat and Heal
Depression:
EAT: sweet potatoes, whole wheat bread, tuna, flaxseed, spinach, chicken, mushrooms, salmon, mackerel, walnuts
AVOID: foods containing omega-6 fatty acids such as corn and soybean oils.
Diabetes:
EAT: high fiber cereal, raisins, vinegar, peanut butter, oranges, oatmeal, figs, beans, liver, tuna, grapefruit
AVOID: high-glycemic foods such as candy and refined grains.
Headaches and Migraines:
EAT: tuna, ginger, popcorn, broccoli, acorn squash, clams, salmon, brown rice, oat meal, green peas, potatoes, shrimp, skim milk
AVOID: specific foods that may trigger your headache.
High Blood Pressure:
EAT: bananas, whole wheat bread, garlic, flaxseed, prunes, broccoli, mackerel, oranges, canola oil.
AVOID: foods high in saturated fat such as red meat. Salt and alcohol in large amounts.
High Cholesterol:
EAT: oat bran, barley, walnuts, onions, cranberries, spinach, apples, avocadoes, garlic, wheat germ, kale, beans
AVOID: foods high in saturated fats such as red meat and whole-milk dairy products
Eat and Heal Two
Basil: reduces inflammation, protects your heart, kills bacteria
Chili peppers: aids digestion, soothes sore throat, tames pain, combats cancer, clears sinuses, boosts your immune system
Cinnamon: kills bacteria, aids digestion, stabilizes blood sugar, blocks diarrhea, fights food poisoning
Cumin: combats cancer, aids digestion, boosts your immune system
Garlic: lowers cholesterol, controls blood pressure, combats cancer, kills bacteria, fights fungus
Ginger: neutralizes nausea, combats cancer, aids digestion, tames arthritis pain, enhances blood flow, sooths heartburn
Green Tea: combats cancer, protects your heart, helps stop strokes, promotes weight loss, strengthens bones, kills bacteria
Olive Oil: protects your heart, promotes weight loss, eases arthritis, combats cancer, battles diabetes, smoothes skin
Turmeric: reduces inflammation, combats cancer, aids digestion, guards against liver disease, eases arthritis
