May 4, 2010:
Running Beta of UPM-OMAKE site goes online.
Q: What does O.M.A.K.E. do?
A: In a nutshell, UPM - O.M.A.K.E. tries to bring using media Japanese Culture to the populace of the University of the Philippines-Manila. For further informetion, please refer to the "regular activities" corner.
Q: I want to join O.M.A.K.E. How?
A: We hold recruitment cycles at the start of every year. It starts with distributing application forms, collecting the completed forms, interviewing each applicant, and inducting all applicants en masse.
Q: I wasn't inducted. Am I still a member?
A: Technically, yes. We'll have to induct you by some other means one way or the other (by some mumbo-jumbo the admin will have to pull), but otherwise, you may still function as a member.
Q: Do you need to be a cosplayer to join O.M.A.K.E?
A: No. Neither do you have to be able to draw in manga style or be able to speak in Japanese. It just turns out that the most visible of our members are, but it is not a requirement.
Q: You enjoy Japanese culture. Isn't that un-nationalistic, ergo, going against the teachings of UP?
A: Liking another country's culture and being patriotic are not mutually exclusive. Similarly, Other UP campuses have anime/manga orgs of their own and their nationalism haven't been called into question to the best of our knowledge.
Q: How come I haven't heard of O.M.A.K.E. before?
A: We're like ninjas. We're invisible.
OMAKE is a non-political group composed mainly of anime, manga, J-drama, cosplay and movie enthusiasts that seek to share the knowledge on Japanese culture among its members, and the Filipino society. As such, it is dedicated to cater to the insatiable needs of anime and manga enthusiasts of UP Manila.
It aims to promote greater awareness in people regarding Japanese culture in general; to further develop a sense of unity among the members of the organization through shared interests; to promote social consciousness about hobbies and other recreational activities in relation to Japanese culture.
Anime/Manga Archive
Being an organization the primarily caters to fans of Anime and Manga, the organization maintains an archive of Anime and Manga for members (and if possible, non-members to enjoy).
Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE)
Since 2009, UPM-OMAKE has held three Alternative Classroom Learning Experiences, touching topics as the History of Japanese Animation, Basic Japanese Grammar, and the Art of Manga. It is the first organization to hold two simultaneous ACLE's in a single day, and one of the few organizations to have such sessions "sold out" within five hours of sign-ups being started,
OMAKE maid cafe
a maid cafe is a subcatergory of a costume cafe, wherein a cafe's waithelp are dressed as French maids/butlers and quite literally cater to the whims of their customers, going so far as calling them goshujin-sama (master) or ojou-sama (princess). UPM-OMAKE holds one of these during the UPM Feb Fair, sponsored by the University Student Council.
Japanese Lessons
Due to the inability of students of UPM to avail of Japanese Language classes, UPM-OMAKE holds Japanese Lessons, touching grammar, vocabulary, and sometimes even reading and writing on demand.
Little Tokyo
Every year, UPM-OMAKE opens up a booth that sells anime-related goods, as well as activities found in a typical Japanese Matsuri. Why we call it "little tokyo", and not anything else, is beyond us.
