Who is Kristen Becker?
Welcome to the home of all things Kristen Becker.
Who is Becker? Good Question. Keep reading and you will see she is a little bit of everything.
Becker’s career started 9 years ago in Toronto and has taken her across the United States and Canada.
As a performer, Becker was a semifinalist on Last Comic Standing (She really thinks it’s season 5, but she can’t remember, she knows she was in Montreal, though) and was named one of CURVE magazine’s “America’s Funniest Lesbians”. She has opened for Doug Stanhope, Ani DiFranco and Josh Blue, to name a few. That’s right Doug Stanhope AND Ani DiFranco. Odds are if you know one of those two people, you don’t know the other. Those artists are at opposite ends of the spectrum, and Becker has killed both audiences. That’s range, my friend.
As a producer/performer, Becker started the Dykes Of Hazard (DOH) Comedy Tour, and three years after its inception, DOH is taking giant steps into the hetero clubs hitting venues such as the House of Blues, New Orleans and M Bar Hollywood. Can you say crossover artists? Apparently allergic to sleep, in her hometown of Buffalo, NY, in an effort to build a comedy scene, Kristen kicked off the Doin’ Time Comedy Showcase, providing a stage for the artform, in a city that needed a good laugh. Three years later multiple open mic rooms have popped up across the city and The Tuesday night Showcase remains a staple in the Rust Belt.
There is alot more you should know about her, look around the site, there are some video’s, some links, some nice things people have said, and most IMPORTANTLY check out upcoming gigs. You want to see her show. The girl has smarts
Doin' Time Comedy originated in 2006 as a weekly open mic show, produced and hosted by Becker. At the time, there was no other stage specifically for folks who dared step onstage to try to make others laugh. Sure, comedy can be done at music open mics, but the situation is less than ideal for the type of focus required to enjoy the experience of live comedy.
Almost five years later, most of the up and coming comics in the city got their start at the Doin' Time Comedy Showcase . The Tuesday night showcase has grown exponentially AND multiple other weekly and monthly shows have sprung up around the city !
Doin' Time is also branching out to host acts passing through town and special events shows with national comics in an intimate stage like Nietzsche's
Since 2007, Doin' Time has produced the likes of Josh Blue, Doug Stanhope, Rick Shapiro PLUS we have co produced multiple tours including Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad, Lea Delaria and Maggie Casella, and the Altercation Punk Comedy Tour.
In January 2011. Doin' Time welcomes MARIA BAMFORD!
In 2010, Becker joined forces with the internet juggernaut WNYmedia.net and Buffalocomedy.com was born. The site is not only a comprehensive guide to comedy in the city but also produces HILARIOUS original content. Check the site out and find your favorite writer or performer, and check the calender to find out when you can see them Live!
In addition look for upcoming national acts passing through town and if you know of an upcoming comedy event got towww.buffalocomedy.comand let us know!
Dykes of Hazard Comedy hit the road in December 2006.
Recognizing the lack of quality entertainment touring lesbian bars, Becker teamed up with Veteran comics Slim Bloodworth from Houston and Canadian comedian Linda Ellis.
The trio toured the southeast regularly for three years playing everywhere that would have them. From the Red Carpet Lounge in Pensacola to the the House of Blues in New Orleans, DOH became a fan favorite.
The tour transitioned from a "lesbian" comedy show to a 'f'n funny' comedy show. Straight men gobbled up DOH t shirts to wear with pride. Additional comics were brought onboard as Dykes of Hazard set up a run of weekly shows at Rubyfruit Jungle.
Sarah Donaldson was served beignets from the neighbor (by neighbor I mean the occupant of the house we parked the van in front of)
His name is "Zero" and he is awesome.
New Orleanian Elizabeth Bolles jumped in the van, against her better judgement and got some chicken fingers. Did I tell you about the time Jeff D drove across the country? Seriously, across the country. And he's hysterical.
The Westward haul brought Jen House from Detroit and MC Sampler, all the way to LA. Detroit came out in full force in LA and MBar said we could tell jokes.
The most recent incarnation of Dykes of Hazard comedy is the Variety Hour!
Set in the Ninth Ward inside Babeville, in Buffalo, NY
Every second Thursday, the group gathers the best in sketch, stand up comedy, music and burlesque and throws it in a basement just to see what happens.
We have professional writers, I'm just sayin'.
