Ms. Munirabanu's new business equipment
Ms. Munirabanu, a bright 21-year old woman from Vandavasi, was forced to abandon her secondary studies at the 10th standard when her father was unable to sustain her school tuition through his earnings as a bicycle repairman. Determined to complete her education, Ms. Munirabanu sought to supplement her father's meager income with earnings of her own. However, she neither had the financing nor the skills to start her own entrepreneurial venture. When she met representatives from the Muthamizh Self Help Group, she immediately sought their advice and guidance.
Through the Muthamizh SHG, she learned essential skills in accounting and marketing, along with vocational training in embroidery and sari painting. Though she had an innate talent for embroidery, she soon realized that she would need more equipment to scale up the business.
Through a 10,000 Rupee loan from the ASSCOD/Development Promotion Group (DPG) microcredit program, Ms. Munirabanu was able to fund the purchase of an embroidery machine.
Soon, Ms. Munirabanu was attracting job orders from leading clothing stores and was earning up to 100 rupees per day. Within months her life had changed, and she had become a pillar of support for her family.
In the months since the initial loan, she successfully availed larger loans through the microcredit program and a local bank, and started a small cut piece production center in her home. Through this new product line she earned additional monthly income of 2,500 Rupees.
Her new found income stream supported the health care needs of her mother, and the educational needs of her younger brother. Furthermore, in addition to her domestic financial responsibilities, Ms. Munirabanu became an active participant in SHG activities, and took the initiative to train fellow SHG members in the art of embroidery and sari painting.
Today, through her experience and self confidence, she has accepted a junior leadership role in the SHG, frequently visiting government offices and banks to lobby for new schemes and services for her Self Help Group.
Though Ms. Munirabanu can now sustain herself and her family, she still seeks to complete her education, thereby achieving a personal dream of hers. ASSCOD, DPG and State Bank of India are proud to help Ms. Munirabanu achieve her most cherished dreams.
