YOUTH FOR ECO-JUSTICE WORKSHOP

The Lutheran World Federation has teamed up with the World Council of Churches to bring youth leaders from across the globe to Durban to discuss the issues of climate change and advocacy. The group will be part of a workshop that will coincide with the COP17 meetings. Plant a Tree, Make a Difference

Tree Planting For A Brighter TomorrowLUCSA is encouraging its communion of churches to plant trees between 28 November and 9 Decemebr to coincide with COP17. On 7 December LUCSA will hold tree planting ceremony and prayer vigil at the Lutheran Centre in Bonaero Park, South Africa to higlight the occasion. CLIMATE CHANGE IS A FAITH-BASED ISSUEClimate change is the term used for changes in weather patterns on a global scale, including changes in temparatures, the timing of seasons and rainfall. One of the effects of climate change is global warming, which is a slow, but measurable increase in the earth's temperature. As a result, the oceans are warming, ice caps in the north and south poles are rapidly melting, sea levels are rising, and extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, cold spells, and heat waves are occuring more often.Greenhouse gases are gases which occur naturally in the atmosphere, trapping heat from the sun, which keeps the earth warm. The levels of some of these gases, including carbon dioxide, is rising dramatically due, in part, to human activities. Carbon dioxide is released into the atmoshpere when we burn non-renewable fossile fuels like coal, oil, and gas. These fuels are mainly used in electricity production and transportation. Clearing forests for agriculture and human development is also contributing to an increase in green house gas levels worldwide.Because climate change is having an effect on temperatures and weather patterns it will affect us in a number of ways. Malaria and other diseases will begin to spread further and faster due to hotter temperatures. Safe and reliable sources of water will be is threatened by flooding, droughts, and expanding deserts. Conflicts over water resources have already begun to unfold across the planet with no end in sight. Fluxuations in rainfall will making growing seasons unpredictable, making planning and growing more difficult. Many plants and animal species are threatened due to the decrease in their living enviroments . Due to rising sealevels coastal cities and farmlands will face an unpredictable future.No-one will escape the effects of climate change, but the poorest populations will suffer the most . God provides more than enough for all of humanity's needs but not our greed. As people of faith, we are called to be God's stewards and keepers of His creation. We must strive to limit our non-renewable energy consumption, cut down on our waste, and advocate to others to do the same.

COP17 - UNITED NATIONS CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE CHANGEFrom 28 November through 9 December leaders from around the world will decend on Durban, South Africa to try and develop a conprehensive plan to combat climate change. This is the 17th meeting of its kind since 1992. While other meetings have produced various documents and protocols to reduce greenhouse gases, a lfully inclusive, egally binding document has yet to be developed and signed into law. Building on the successes of COP16 in Cancun, Mexico, COP17 seeks to further draft a lasting document that can help to bring lasting changes, through the decrease of collective emissions.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________THE TIME IS NOWUnless global leaders draft a plan to stat meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by 2015, global warming could become unstoppable. This is why COP17 is such a criticle conference. Without decisive action in Durban the future of God's creation could be set on a path of immense destruction.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________YOU CAN HELP ADVOCATEWhat can you do about all this? The answer is: A LOT!You can start by continuing to educate yourself about the issues of climate change and what causes it. You can also take that information and educate others, helping to cultivate a society of climate justice advocacy. Encourage your Southern African faith community to get involved and set an example by becoming an eco-congregation (visit www.safcei.org.za for more information). Lobby your local and regional government officials on the issues surrounding climate change and become a voice for those most effected by unethical policy decisions. Together we can make a huge difference!

LWF together – the Earth needs you gives groups of Lutheran young people around the globe the chance to share their faith, pray and work for ecological justice.What | The Global Communion ExperimentLWF together links groups of young people worldwide aged 15-30 for discussion and action on God’s creation and environmental stewardship.Three groups in different regions will be matched so they can share insights and learn about ecological issues people in other areas of the Lutheran communion are facing. For six months, each set of three groups will study relevant Bible passages and take a look at creation care challenges where they live.Each group will organize activities to address ecological injustice at both the local and global level, looking to connect with the work of others in the program.
The We Have Faith-Act Now For CLimate Justice Campaign is a Pan-African movement of people, faith communities, faith leaders and youth mobilized to represent the wide spread belief among Africans of the need for a just and robust outcome of the climate negotiations in South Africa in December.We are hosting a serious of event, concerts, rallies and actions throughout Africa, linked together by a convoy of buses travelling from Kenya to South Africa to get the message across that COP17 must deliver a fair and ambitious climate treaty that secures the future of the continent.
Within the Southern African Faith Communities Environment Institute (SAFCEI), there are a number of task teams or work programmes. The Climate Change task team comprises active members of SAFCEI that work on the climate change programme of action.SAFCEI’s climate task team has several areas of work: * Capacity building of faith communities in the area of climate change. * Networking with faith communities and like minded-organisations within civil society to share our positions and ideas on how to address climate change. * Participating in civil society organising structures in the lead up to COP17 (including CJN and Norwedgian Church Aid/Swedish Church). * Advocating our positions and concerns to government leaders and engaging in participative policy processes that focus on climate change and energy.
