MISSION

We, the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, strive to strengthen Sisterhood amongst women by providing service and promoting cultural diversity to our members and our community, thus securing the bond of kinship for posterity. Kappa Phi Lambda exists to further educate individuals about Pan-Asian culture, while keeping our own identities. We aim for academic excellence, keeping in mind the importance of education and learning as the key to strength, awareness, and fulfillment.

Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority is an organization, which prides itself on its sense of commitment to cultural diversity and strong bonds of sisterhood. However, our other primary focus is to offer our service to the community. Community and culture is largely what has made us the strong and independent women we are today. It is for these reasons that we want to reciprocate and give back to the communities around us. Sisters participate in individual community service events of their choice, as well as those which we support as a whole and unified organization. Each respective school has also designated at least one local non-profit organization as their philanthropic cause. Kappa Phi Lambda predominately focuses on contributing to domestic violence organizations while maintaining its sense of diversity by fundraising for other types of causes of concern. UMich Kappas love giving back to the community! We are involved in everything from helping kids to baking cookies. In the past, we have helped young children make cards at the KGRAMS Kids Fair, rang bells for donations given to the Salvation Army, baked cookies for the Ronald McDonald House, participated in the Korean Cultural Art Fair, headlined cultural workshops, and participated in the APIA High School Conference. National Philanthropy Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority is a growing Asian American interest sorority. While we celebrate all the Asian countries prospering in America, we also recognize the issues faced by Asian American women. Despite the independent and bountiful state of this country, our people are slipping through the socio-economic cracks of our government. Our national philanthropy is about empowering Asian American women by helping them overcome issues from domestic violence, hate crimes, economic injustice, to immigration rights. The national organization, National Asian Pacific American Women's Forum, works on a grassroots level for social and economic justice and the political empowerment of Asian and Pacific American women and girls. Through national campaigns including legislation reform, media attention, and grassroots movements, they are working on 6 platforms including civil rights, economic justice, educational access, ending violence against women, health, and immigrant and refugee rights. Kappa Phi Lambda pledges to donate to this national organization, which benefits Asian American women. Our goal is to empower women living in poverty, fear, and illness.
Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority strives to emphasize the importance of cultural diversity -- not only within our own organization, but also to the universities where we exist, and outside the community. While we do classify ourselves as a Pan-Asian interest sorority, by no means do we limit membership to those of only Asian descent. We have sisters from very diverse backgrounds including French, Korean, Chinese, Latino, Thai, Filipino, Indonesian, and Japanese.(At our school alone, 18 different ethnicities are represented!) Diversity is what helps broaden the horizons of thinking. It is for this reason that we always welcome young women of interest from all ethnic backgrounds. Through various workshops and events, Kappa Phi Lambda continuously tries to educate our members, schools, and communities about Asian culture. Likewise, we stress the importance of awareness on events occurring in our society on a daily basis. Kappa Phi Lambda at UMich is active in spreading cultural diversity in the community through performing at cultural shows and participating in cultural workshops. Over the years, Kappas have performed a cultural and hip-hop dance in Huaren (a Chinese Culture Show), MLK cultural fair, and GenAPA (an Asian Pacific American Culture Show). Also, we have presented at cultural workshops like Co-Existence, which promotes harmony in the relations between all those of different ethnic backgrounds as well as Theta Nu Xi's interracial dialogue.
Promoting Sisterhood amongst women is important in Kappa Phi Lambda. UMich Kappas travel together all over the United States. We attend National Conventions held at our base in New York, and we participate in Regional Conferences around the Mid-West. At home base in Ann Arbor, we hold our own sisterhood activities with the purpose of bonding in mind. Part of our bonding is working together when it comes to community service, fundraising, and hosting or participating in cultural events on campus. Outside of sorority work, Kappas hang out, eat, and study together. As sisters, we recognize that we all have differences and accept them. If anything, we would like our sisters to be diverse in interest, personality, and heritage. Open-mindedness is what makes us sisters.

History

Sorority History

On March 9, 1995, seven exceptional young women at Binghamton University came together to create an organization based on their ideals and values of Asian-American culture. These seven founders, Elizabeth Choi, Karen Eng, Rei Hirasawa, Hee Cho Moon, Chae Yoo Park, Samantha Somchanhmavong, and Connie Yang united with a single vision of providing women with the chance to use their pride in their heritage to become eaders of society. We support diversity and are open to women of all nationalities and backgrounds. Though we may be one of the youngest Greek organizations, we have become one of the fastest growing and well-respected organizations.

Phi Chapter History

In Winter 2003, a group of four determined young women, our Charters: Abigail Clark, Stefanie Dioso, Ann Hsueh, and Christine Ma, sought to create a group that embodied and brought stronger principles of education, cultural awareness, service and sisterhood to our campus. The Charters pledged and worked hard with sisters from all around the country, overcoming many trials and growing stronger and wiser in the process. As a result, the University of Michigan colony was established on April, 13 2003.

Why I decided to rush Kappa: After a semester of indecisiveness, I decided to come back to KPL Winter '10 Rush because I got along really well with the person who eventually became my Big. I chose KPL because I wanted to strengthen the bonds that I had already created with the sisters I had already met. Meeting more sisters and the girls who are now my line sisters was an added bonus :)

Rush What is rush?Rush is a period of time when you can learn more about the different Greek organizations on campus. One of the most important things to remember during rush is to keep an open mind. Our rush is designed for all interested women to relax, meet our sisters, and especially, see what Kappa Phi Lambda is all about!Do I have to be Asian to join?Not at all! Kappa Phi Lambda is an Asian-interest sorority, but we are NOT Asian exclusive. We have many different nationalities and ethnicities represented within Kappa Phi Lambda, and as part of the Multicultural Greek Community, diversity is part of our mission.What is a bid and how do I get one?A bid is an invitation to begin the intake process, and it is given at the end of rush. To be eligible for a bid, you need to have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5, attend at least two social events, and one General Interest Meeting (GIM). At the end of rush, you will need to sign up for an Interview where sisters can learn more about you and see what you have to offer to our sorority. You will be notified a couple of days after your Interview whether you do or do not have a bid.What is the intake process?The intake process is a period of time in which you learn about the sisters, the foundations of our sorority, and it is the journey towards becoming a sister. There is no specific guideline regarding to how long pledging will be. The purpose of the intake process is to challenge yourself and to learn more about yourself, your pledge sisters, and the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda.What is hazing and does Kappa Phi Lambda haze?We do not haze, and the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority would never put you in an embarrassing or harmful situation. To learn more about hazing, visit www.stophazing.org.Will going through the intake process affect my grades?Academic excellence is one of the founding principles and pillars of Kappa Phi Lambda. During the intake process, time will be set for your studies. If you have any concerns, please talk to a sister.Is there information for my parents?Yes, and it would be good to have parental support if you choose to join Kappa Phi Lambda or any organization in general.
