The arms of said Kappa Phi Lambda are blazoned as follows, quarterly sanguine and argent, first, an orchid proper, second, a diamond sceptre proper, third, two candles argent alighted, fourth, a globe proper, all within a border agent and surmounted by a vallary crown bearing the greek letter Kappa Phi Lambda, behind the shield, a phoenix wings displayed sable. The motto is Fraternite, Servitium, Varietas, which means Sisterhood, Service, Cultural Diversity'.
Seven extraordinary women came together to establish Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. at Binghamton University on March 9, 1995. These seven founders, Elizabeth Choi, Karen Eng, Rei Hirasawa, Hee Cho Moon, Chae Yoo Park, Samantha Somchanhmavong, and Connie Yang united with a single vision of providing women with the chance to use their pride in their heritage to become leaders of society. The sorority was conceived through the notion of an organization that would provide a culturally sound and educationally inspiring grounding for Asian American women. These seven women envisioned themselves laying the cornerstones of what was to become a culturally revolutionary and unprecedented organization. This cultural based sorority was to unite young women of differing heritages and encourage them to make use of their strong voices and thoughts. This sorority is open to women of all nationalities and backgrounds who want to learn about, actively speak for, and represent Pan-Asian culture. Held together by the bond of sisterhood and striving to educate each other and the rest of the community, our founding mothers not only channeled Asian American awareness through voice, but also by action. They taught each other about strength and ambition while discovering their own true unparalleled identities in the process. These first sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda also extended their hands to the community through charitable works of both service oriented and philanthropic natures. By doing so, they were able to make a real and impacting difference in the world around them. All the while, they were given the opportunity to educate others about the beauty and complexity of Pan-Asian culture. Kappa Phi Lambda formed to provide the campus, and on a large scale, the society, with yet another option for learning, and another outlet for activity.
Today, nearly a decade after our founding mothers established Kappa Phi Lambda. the sorority has grown past the boundaries of Binghamton University. What had been only the legacy of seven exceptional women, had quickly bcame the tradition and inspiration of over seven hundred unique women. Although Kappa Phi Lambda is one of the youngest Greek organizations nationwide, it has successfully flourished into a strong and respectable one that is recognized by Asian American organizations, our peers, and Greek colleagues from all over. Although the sisters of each school abide by the mission set forth by our founding mothers, each school is also unique in its own right, adding to our respect for diversity. This is symbolic of the sisters we seek: unique, intelligent, ambitious women who want to make a difference as leaders in our organization and in the culture we take pride in.. Our ultimate goal is to spread our vision and share our experiences with other exceptional women. We are progressing steadily throughout time, and we will be able to fulfill our ultimate goal with the help of these potential leaders as well as those of you that have yet to come.
Several years ago, seven beautiful women lit the fire that is Kappa Phi Lambda and watched it grow. That fire now burns brightly within each of its present sisters, carrying with it all of our individual aspects, and it will continue to burn within the sisters to come.
We, the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated, strive to strengthen Sisterhood amongst women by providing service and promoting cultural diversity to our members and our community, thus securing the bond of kinship for posterity. Kappa Phi Lambda exists to further educate individuals about Pan-Asian culture, while keeping our own identities. We aim for academic excellence, keeping in mind the importance of education and learning as the key to strength, awareness, and fulfillment.

Although it is difficult to describe, the bond of sisterhood is a common light that burns passionately in each sister. We embrace a unique relationship based on friendship, respect, and a shared vision. Wherever we go, and no matter how long ago we were initiated, each sister is connected and important to the sorority. With a network of sisters spanning across the globe, we can find comfort in knowing that Kappa extends so much further beyond our own universities!
There's no sisterhood like the KAPPA SISTERHOOD.
(Community Service & Philanthropy)
Kappa Phi Lambda is an organization which prides itself on its sense of commitment to cultural diversity and strong bonds of sisterhood. However, our other primary focus is to offer service to the community. Community and culture is largely what has made us strong and independent women today. It is for these reasons that we want to reciprocate and give back to the communities around us. Sisters participate in individual community service events of their choice, as well as those which we support as a whole and unified organization. The sorority predominately focuses on contributing to domestic violence organizations, all the while maintaining its sense of diversity by fundraising for other types of causes of concern. Some community service events that Kappa Phi Lambda has done are volunteering at the Willow Point Nursing Home, the Discovery Center, Juvenile Diabetes Walk, Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Chow Walk, sponsorship of American Red Cross blood drives, and voter registration.
Kappa Phi Lambda is a growing Asian American interest sorority. While we celebrate all the Asian countries prospering in America, we also recognize the issues faced by Asian American women. Despite the independence and bountiful state of this country, our people are slipping through the socio-economic cracks of our government. Our national philanthropy is about empowering Asian American women by helping them overcome issues from domestic violence, hate crimes, economic injustice, to immigration rights. The national organization, National Pacific American Women's Forum, works on a grassroots level for social and economic justics and the political empowerment of Asian and Pacific American women and girls. Through national campaigns including legislation reform, media attention, and grassroot movements, they are working on 6 platforms including civil rights, economic injustice, educational access, ending violence against women, health, and immigrant and refugee rights. Kappa Phi Lambda pledges to donate to this national organization which benefits Asian American women. Our goal is to empower women living in poverty, fear, and illness.
Our chapter has also held car washes, book drives and other campus events. We believe it is important to give back to the community what is given to us. Our chapter philanthropy is the S.O.S. Shelter for Battered Women. The S.O.S. Shelter assists families who experience or are threatened with domestic violence. They increase the community's awareness of this pervasive problem.
Kappa Phi Lambda strives to emphasize the importance of cultural diversity--not only within our own organization but also to the universities at which we exist and outside the community. While we do classify ourselves as a Pan-Asian interest sorority, by no means do we limit membership to those of only Asian descent. We have sisters from very diverse backgrounds, including French, Korean, Chinese, Latina, Thai, Filipina, Indonesian, and Japanese. Diversity is what helps us broaden the horizons of thinking. It is for this reason that we always welcome young women of interest from all ethnic backgrounds. Through various workshops and events, Kappa Phi Lambda continuously tries to educate our members, schools, and communities about Asian culture. Likewise, we stress the importance of awareness on events occuring in our society on a daily basis.

What is rush?
Rush is a time when you can acquaint yourself with all the organizations on campus so you can make sure that you find yourself the right one. One of the most important things to remember is to keep an open mind. Kappa Phi Lambda's rush provides an opportunity for all those interested to come out and get to know our Sisters and see what we're about. Our rush is designed especially for you to be able to come out and have a good time, providing a relaxed environment for you to ask questions and interact with our Sisters. And best of all, everything is free!
Why Kappa Phi Lambda?
A sorority is defined as: A chiefly social organization of women students at a college or university, usually designated by Greek letters. Well, Kappa is so much more. What makes us different from a club is that we are founded on the idea of Sisterhood. A Sister is always there to lend an ear, to give a helping hand, share your happiness with. Sisterhood is eternal. Be a leader and not a follower. As one of the fastest growing organizations of its kind, be a part of the foundation, don't just be another face. There are unlimited opportunities to meet new people, network, and prepare for your future. Build strong leadership qualities that are invaluable. With Kappa, there is never a dull moment. With year long commitments to community service, our philanthropy, and of course mixers and parties, your college career is sure to be a well-rounded one.
Do I Have to be Asian to Join?
Absolutely not. Kappa Phi Lambda is an Asian interest sorority but we do not exclude ourselves to only Asian sisters. We have many sisters of different nationalities represented within Kappa Phi Lambda and being a cultural sorority, we promote cultural diversity amongst other values. We are an Asian interest sorority.
What is the Intake Process?
Intake is a learning period when you journey into becoming a sister. There are no specific guidelines on how long it will be, or how hard, but the purpose of intake is to challenge you and teach you more about yourself, your line sisters, and the sisters of Kappa Phi Lambda. Kappa Phi Lambda strictly abides by the rules and beliefs behind a positive intake process. There is never a moment that Kappa Phi Lambda would put you in an embarrassing or harmful situation.
What is a Bid? How Do I Get One?
After the end of rush week, bids are distributed. These bids are your invitations to become intake members for the sorority. To be considered for a bid, you need to attend at least 1 GIM, 2 rush events, and Kappaccino. You also need a grade point average of at least 2.5 to qualify. We normally cannot allow first semester freshmen to partake in the intake process, unless they have at least 12 college credits. We do, however, encourage everyone and anyone interested to come out and rush for us. Should you receive and accept a bid, it signifies the next step --- the intake process.
