Karina Lapierre-Douglas was raised in the city of Montreal in the eighties. In 2000, she graduated with distinction from Concordia University, with a major in Painting & Drawing. In 2001, she relocated to Toronto, where she has been actively participating in the art community. She is currently devoting herself to painting on a full-time basis.
The photograph has been a longstanding element in my work, with its notions of a time past and its purpose as a memento of people or places one may or may not have known personally. While photographs of strangers and unknown locations have always fascinated me, my current work deals with my own personal travels and the memory of being in unfamiliar, magical territory. By using elements of the photograph such as the frame and the surface on which the photograph sits as strong compositional aspects in my work, I am asking the viewer to partake in this remembering. With this offering of a momentary escape from the monotony of our daily grind, I am hoping that the viewer’s own memories of long-ago-visited places may also be unleashed.
