My love affair with photography began in the darkroom, but these days I work with digital equipment. I shoot vast landscapes, tiny microscopic worlds, and everything in between. Much of my time is devoted to creating un-manipulated images of my environment. I hope that my work will encourage the viewer to stop for a moment and reflect on the awe-inspiring, exquisite complexity of our natural world.
In my most precious photographic moments I experience the landscape around me as an extension of myself. I am equally aware that I am creating it and that I am responding to it. I am both detached from my surroundings and absorbed by them. I love the experience of being totally present and without preconception, meeting each new moment with fresh innocence.
There are also times when the landscapes of my imagination demand to be expressed. My first manipulated images were created in the darkroom. I celebrate the wonderful digital technologies with which I can now translate my visual imaginings into ‘reality’. I have come a long way since my awkward beginnings with lith-masks, pin registration boards and multiple negatives. Although there are times when I miss the darkroom, I am more interested in results than any esoteric argument about the ‘right’ way to achieve them. For me, digital imaging opens the door to rich visual story-telling. I celebrate the increasing acceptance of this as a legitimate medium for artistic expression.
