Hi. I'm Kim.So I've tried to write a fancy-schmancy, third-person bio about myself and I'm decidedly lousy at it. (In fact, I've typed, erased, and re-typed this opening paragraph about 5 times now.) It's just not me. So, here you go...the non-fancy, first-person, but-at-least-it's-me version:I love music. I've been playing piano since I was 4 years old and grew up listening to all different genres...everything from Mozart to the Beach Boys to Louis Prima to show tunes to Billy Joel to Coldplay. I originally wanted to compose film scores, but somewhere down the line I started adding words to these tunes that kept rolling around in my head, and I've been hooked on songwriting ever since. I like some of my songs, and then there are some that are pretty terrible and noooo one will ever hear, but either way, songwriting has become a way of life for me, a way to digest things and express and communicate. And plus I think it's just plain fun and I love it.I grew up in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania (I'll save you the Google search - it's on the east side of the state, about an hour and a half north of Philadelphia) and still consider that place "home". I was a classical piano major at a local college for a year before transferring to another school in Dallas, Texas. While down in Texas, I recorded my first, self-titled EP and was grateful to have such swell and talented guys like Will Hunt (Amy Lee, Shane & Shane, Ryan Cabrera) and Ken Calderon help produce it. These days, I'm in San Diego, CA...writing, performing, and planning for a new album. I'm inspired by people I meet, places I go, books I read, movies I watch. I write about love, life, God, gadgets and gizmos aplenty and who's-its and what's-its galore...the twenty thingamabobs I have stashed in an underwater grotto...you know, those sorts of things. I try to write "honestly" (what that exactly means, I'm still discovering). But mostly, I'm just me and it spills out in song form.So there you have it. Thank you for listening, for checking me out in the first place, for reading this very long, very non-fancy, very first-person bio...I appreciate you from the bottom of my heart.Love,Kim What got you started playing piano and singing? When I was about 4 years old, a young concert pianist named Bryan Popin came to my church and blew everyone away with his playing. He was phenomenal, and I wanted to be like him.As for singing, it wasn’t until I toured with a choir in the summer of 2003 that I even gained the confidence to sing. I originally thought I'd just be playing the piano for the tour, but it was way more than that. The directors, Dr. & Mrs. Goida, taught me so much about singing, and I really owe it to them for bringing me out of my shell. When did you start writing songs?I wrote my first instrumental song on piano when I was 8, but I was 15 when I wrote my first song with music and lyrics. What musicians have influenced your style?Nichole Nordeman, Coldplay, Billy Joel, the Beatles, a lot of classical composers, and others, I’m sure…but definitely Nichole Nordeman. She was probably my biggest influence when I first started writing. What advice would you give your 10-year-old self?Practice piano! And buy stock in Google.Favorite bands/musical artists: Debussey, Chopin, the Beach Boys, Coldplay, Regina Spektor, Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Ingrid Michaelson, Imogen Heap, Nichole Nordeman, The Carpenters, Vanessa Mae, the list goes on and on…(and changes quite frequently)Favorite food: pork lo mein (with extra soy sauce)…it’s like manna from heavenFavorite piece of clothing in your wardrobe: Right now, I’m in love with my charcoal gray, long woolen overcoat. I look for reasons to go out just so I can wear it! And I bought it on sale, which increases my love for it even more. :)Favorite childhood cartoon: old-school Looney Tunes & Merry Melodies, baby!Favorite non-board game: badminton (I have this secret desire to one day play badminton in the Olympics…which I guess is not so secret anymore)Have you ever watched one movie so much that you memorized it completely? Yes…I used to be able to quote “That Thing You Do!” backwards in my sleepWhat was your ambition as a child? to be an archaeologist, baseball player, journalist…and tallerIf you were a vegetable, what would you be? Broccoli. I’d be a miniature green tree, the ultimate coolness in vegetable social circles. What’s the best job you’ve ever had? Hands down, it was being an extra in “Transformers 2″. I got to run around, scream, be in a movie AND get paid for it!Is there anyone you would like to meet? I'd really love to meet my sponsor child in Ghana; and I'd love to talk with actress Jodi Benson over a cup of hot cocoa.
