NBS Promo...
The Western Region of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) is comprised of 23 member clubs and is organized to support the goals of the NBS. The region's mission is to ensure the survival and growth of member clubs to promote unity and harmony through fun and education. The elected positions are Vice President, two Directors, Secretary and Treasurer. Other positions, such as Financial Secretary, are appointed.
The four founding ski clubs for the regions are: All Seasons, 4 Seasons West, 4 Seasons Northwest, and Ujama. NBS elections were held in 1975; in the following year, 1976, George Phillips of All Seasons Ski Club, was elected first Western Region Vice President. The first two Directors were Ben Finley of 4 Seasons West, and Joe Jones of 4 Seasons Northwest. Surprisingly, during its 24-year history, there have only been six Regional Vice-Presidents due to several serving multiple terms.
Winter Carnival and Summer Carnival are the Western Region's largest fund-raisers that support youth ski and non-ski activities. The Western Region also implemented two unique programs. Building Essential Skills and Talents (BEST) is for youth development; and Operations Improvement Seminar (OIS) facilitates management of club operations.
The Western Region can boast of two NBS presidents from its ranks, showing leadership at the national level. Ben Finley, member of 4 Seasons West, also an NBS founder, served two terms, 1982-1984 and 1984-1986. Ben introduced Bonnie St. John-Dean, of Olympic fame, to NBS. Paul Ray, currently president of Black Gold, served the 1988-1990 term. Paul saw the largest profit to that date at Summit '89 in Steamboat Springs. He also introduced successful regional programs, OIS and BEST, to the national level.
The six Vice Presidents for the Western Region are listed below:
1.George Phillips1976-1978

Youth Program
OSF 2010 APPLICATION
NBS mission is to identify, develop, and support athletes of color who will win international and Olympic winter sports competitions representing the United States.
Team NBS is the group within the NBS that is organized to deliver on the mission above. Team NBS is a National Team, under the direction of a Competition Director and Coach, that has the support of other national NBS resources, including the National Youth Director and Olympic Scholarship Fund Administrator.
As previously described, the NBS is composed of 84 member clubs, of predominantly African American descent, organized in four regions, Rocky Mountain, Midwest, East and West. Regional teams are part of the NBS Ski Team (NBSST) system and serve, with the member clubs, as part of the development and support of designated athletes.
Athletes, selected yearly, must meet performance and progress goals. Funding for these athletes is provided through the NBS Olympic Scholarship Fund (OSF). The fundraising activities of the NBS feed the OSF, with a large portion from the Summit, an annual event. OSF funding supports training activities of National Team athletes, including financial assistance for athletes attending approved ski academies. Program support comes primarily from sponsors on a year-to-year basis.
Team NBS is responsible for delivering programs in support of Nordic and Snowboarding athlete development, coach education and credentialing. It is also the NBS organizing entity for United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) sanctioned competitions.

Winter Carnival ~ January 13th - 17th, 2011
Heavenly Valley Mountain - California
Check back soon for more details ......
HISTORY OF THE WINTER CARNIVAL
Winter Carnival evolved as an idea from George Phillips to have clubs meet to ski and socialize. The first Winter Carnival was in 1977, at Squaw Valley, Lake Tahoe. Terry Hendricks coordinated it with much assistance from Floisell Blanton, Carol Mason and Barbara Tyson. Lodging, dinner and dancing was in the old Olympic Village at that time.
Since it was successful, they returned to Squaw in '78 and '80. They went to Bear Valley in 79. It was Mammoth Mountain in '81 and '83; and in '82, they went to Mt. Bachelor in Oregon. Using a bid process, Alpine Meadows became attractive since they were able to use the cafeteria for the dinner--dance and they agreed to make a donation for the youth. Scheduled by the region for MLK, Jr. weekend every year, it kept growing. Lodging, dinner and dancing activity moved to Cal Neva then to Hyatt Regency. Winter Carnival moved in 1998, from Lake Tahoe to Park City, Utah. There was another historic shift, in 1999, to Whistler, Canada. It was the first Winter Carnival held outside the United States.
The first female Director was Denise Thompson, a member of Winter Fox, in 1987. She left office when she married James Lofton. Joe Lewis won a special election in '88 to replace her. The next female Director was in office for seven years. Angela Angie Cain was elected in '92 to fill the balance of Len Barnhills four year term when he became Region Vice President. She was in that office '92-'95, and re-elected for the '95-'99 term.
Initially, Directors had one two year term and one four year term with elections in the odd years. Now both have four year terms. Joe Lewis won a two year, '91-'93, and four year, '93-'97, term. Ron Thomas is Director for '97-2001; Haymon Jahi is Director for '99-2003.
