Highlight a celebrity endorsement or drive your voters to the polls

in a cost effective way.

The telephone is the best way to compliment a candidate's direct mail program with a target audience. However, it is difficult to justify the cost of live callers for most campaigns. Automated phone calls with a recorded message can be done for a fraction of the price of a live call. They are also great tools to use as rapid-response devices when you are attacked by an opponent, a means to highlight key endorsements or a Get-Out-The-Vote mechanism.

Sometimes you need to tell your story.

Jana Duty challenged and defeated a 12-year incumbent in the GOP Primary race for

Williamson County Attorney in 2004 winning

63% of the approximately 23,000 Republican

votes cast.

In her introductory piece of mail, we established

her credibility by linking her work with abused

and neglected children to her family's tradition

of service dating back to the early 1800s and

Texas first settlers.

And sometimes you need to go on the offensive.

Lance Gooden aggressively challenged a

12-year incumbent for State Representative

in the 2010 Republican Primary in an East

Texas district comprising Henderson and

Kaufman Counties. In spite of being

outspent heavily by the incumbent, he won

the election by combining an aggressive

mail and phone program with an intense

grassroots effort.

Attacking the opponent is not a decision

to take lightly, and if it is not done

properly, it will backfire. But this

campaign was defined early on by the

incumbent's inability to deliver on her

prior campaign promises and the fact

that fully 90% of her campaign

contributions were from interests

outside of the district. By using

newspaper clippings, public records

and the incumbent's own words, we

were able to bring these issues to the

attention of voters who responded by

electing a new State Representative.

And at others you need to lay out a broad-based philosophy on a wide range of issues.

Former State District Judge Tryon Lewis, along with two other challengers, ran against a 16-year incumbent for State Representative in the 2008 Republican Primary in an Odessa-based West Texas district.

Judge Lewis led the field going into the

runoff with 44% of the vote and proceeded

to soundly defeat the incumbent by more

than a three-to-one margin in the head-to-

head runoff match up.

In his mail campaign, we

presented Judge Lewis'

ideas on the state and

regional issues facing his

district including education,

water rights and immigration.

You may also need to draw contrasts between yourself and your opponent in order to overcome a large deficit.

In 2008, there was a 4-way contested Republican Primary to fill a vacancy on the 393rd District Court, a civil state district court located in Denton County. Doug Robison narrowly qualified for the runoff, but still trailed the leader 45% to 19%.

During the runoff, Judge Robison

focused on contrasting his

qualifications against his

opponent's record. The voters

responded and elected him in a

landslide 63% to 37%.

In this piece, we highlighted

Judge Robison's years of service

as an advocate for children who

have been abused or neglected

and his 28-years of civil law

experience. We contrasted this

information with his opponent's

history of representing people

accused of crimes against

children, his lack of civil

experience and his base of

support from criminal defense

attorneys and bail bondsmen.

Abel Reyna won more than 33,000 votes and defeated a 20-year incumbent for McLennan County District Attorney in the 2010 General Election. We defined the debate early in the campaign by building the case for change around an annual crime study which named Waco as the 5th most dangerous city in Texas. This combined with the incumbent's poor record of felony prosecutions and Abel's success in securing the full backing of the law enforcement community drove the message in the final days of the campaign.
