“Perfection is the voice of the oppressor, the enemy of the people. It will keep you cramped and insane your whole life . . I think perfectionism is based on the obsessive belief that if you run carefully enough, hitting each stepping-stone just right, you won’t have to die. The truth is that you will die anyway and that a lot of people who aren’t even looking at their feet are going to do a whole lot better than you, and have a lot more fun while they’re doing it.” Anne LaMott dropped that pearl.
It's the little random things really. Ever watch a creature be a creature? Amazing stuff that. They aren't worrying about being a perfect creature. I don't see them concerned over what the other creatures are thinking about them. You ought to watch a creature. Any random creature.
You should try making a mess of things once in a while. I'm pretty sure you'll have a ball doing it. You've got a choice today, an awesome simple choice. You can laugh, or you can not. I've found that the folks who laugh the most are the same folks who make a mess of things once in a while. I know I do on both counts.
It is with laughter and reckless joy I create my clay pieces. They aren't meant to garner accolades, nor great treasure. They certainly aren't meant to be perfect. SmallThingsClay are simply the end result of an artist sitting in her studio listening to her birds chatter, her dogs bark and all the florida sea birds in the sky outside while translating her sense of contentment and love of life into a clay form. I rarely even know what I'm creating when I pick up clay and wire. I just...create, with reckless open abandon.
Because I have never seen a creature worry over the imperfections of it's life. But I have seen them laugh.

It's the little things in life that we forget to appreciate. My name is Kathy. I am a mixed media sculptor using polymer clay, found objects, vintage glass, needle felted wools and silks and colored papers. I have a mental fetish for creatures of water, real or imagined. I am mesmerized by insects and lizards and turtles and toads. My work is whimsical, and humorous. It never takes itself seriously. Color and imagination are my voice. Small Things Clay is my studio in our home in St Petersburg, Florida and I bring all the influences of the Bay and Gulf of Mexico to my studio full of whimsy.
Life is grand, life is perfect and life is meant to be mucked about in.
I do hope, as you view my work, that you find yourself being forced to smile. These pieces are meant to wink and nudge and lighten the moment.
Whimsy, afterall, does mean an "odd or fanciful idea".
SmallThingsClay is proud to be a Sponsor of the Florida Parrot Rescue!
Butters, our B&G Macaw is also thrilled.
Parrots are not pets, parrots are companions and have the intelligence to know as much as a small child. Too often, people come of out pet stores ill equipped to handle such an intelligent creature. You can not just stick a parrot in a cage and call this ownership.
FPR is a 501 non profit dedicated to the rescue, rehab, and adoption of companion parrots and birds.
With every sale of a SmallThing, I will donate $5 to FPR.
I am also designing a donation specific SmallThing, and all proceeds from the sale of this item go straight to FPR and all the wonderful work they do.
Visit my store, find a SmallThing and you'll be doing a great thing for the companion birds here in Florida.
Please visit their site and learn more about what they do for Florida's companion parrots and what you can do to help in the effort. And remember, ADOPTing a rescue animal saves a life.
