The Bridge
Jr. Academy, for 4-5 year old students, provides a safe, nurturing, and motivating environment, which encourages whole child growth and development through exposure to a wide variety of learning experiences, which gives each child the opportunity to develop a love of learning and to grow in self confidence.
A private school for children in kindergarten through 8th grade that addresses a childs academic, social, spiritual, physical and developmental needs through a Christian perspective in a wholesome environment which is secure, stimulating, and academically challenging so each student can achieve his or her potential.
The Bridge is a program dedicated to educating students 3-15 years of age who are affected by autism. The Bridge Program is committed to helping students cross the bridge toward independence through proven, structured methods, specific academic goals, social goals, and whole-life teaching.
Cumorah Academy, as it is known today, began as a dream and vision of Melissa VanBlankenstein, a young mother with several small children, who desired a quality educational program for her children structured with a wholesome environment. After searching for the right school program for her children, she determined it did not exist. The dream and vision began to unfold in 1970, when Melissa started teaching in her home. Since the beginning, she has promoted, "Academic Excellence in a Wholesome Environment" . Her commitment to high standards in education and early childhood development have also allowed her to expand her vision to the field of Child Care Consulting. The dream has grown to the Las Vegas valley. In 2006, Melissa and her daughter, Karena Fisher, partnered to form Cumorah Academy of Las Vegas. The values and standards that have been in place since the beginning are still the foundation of Cumorah Academy today. In September 2010, Cumorah Academy opened The Bridge, a program dedicated to educating children affected by autism.

CUMORAH ACADEMY

Cumorah Academy utilizes the A Beka Curriculum, which is a Christian curriculum from Pensacola, Florida. A Beka has been serving schools for over 30 years with a comprehensive and integrated curriculum which challenges students of all ages and abilities to excel in all subject areas.
In conjunction with academic mastery, Cumorah Academy teaches critical thinking skills, nurtures independence, and cultivates character development. Students are taught the accumulated wisdom of the past so that they will have a firm foundation from which to evaluate the present and make proper decisions for the future.
The Nevada State Board of Education has examined and approved the A Beka curriculum, and has found A Beka to exceed the state standards and requirements.
A full scope and sequence of subject matter is available to all parents.
Cumorah Academy provides open enrollment for Kindergarten through 8th Grade, without regard to race, religion, gender, or national origin. Assessment evaluations for academic placement and behavioral qualifications will be conducted during the enrollment process. Elementary School (K-5th Grade):
Children must be five (5) years of age by September 30th, to be considered for Kindergarten enrollment. Beginning class placement is tentative. If it is determined that a different class assignment is more suitable, the administration will advise parents and make the necessary adjustments. Parents should conference with the principal if they have any educational concerns, an I.E.P., 504 plan, or past grades of D or F.
Middle School (6th-8th Grade):
Middle school student admissions are based on the student being sufficiently prepared to function well in the Cumorah Academy classes for which he/she has applied. To help make these determinations, we use past report cards and testing results. Grades at Cumorah Academy are based on Cumorah Academy standards and curriculum, and may not be comparable to other schools grading systems.

STUDENT ILLNESS/EMERGENCY
Children must be kept home from school if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or other contagious indicators. If a child shows signs of illness or infection while at school, the school will notify the parents. Parents should pick-up their child as soon as possible.
Parents must notify the school if they or their child contract a communicable disease such as chicken pox, hepatitis, measles, etc. The school will notify parents if their child is exposed to a communicable disease at school.
Students may not self-administer medications at school. Medication must be stored in the school office with specific directions for administering. Whenever possible, we strongly recommend parents and physicians schedule medications so students do not have to medicate during the school day.
In case of emergency, we will attempt to contact the parents of the child. If a parent cannot be reached, we will proceed to call the names listed as emergency contacts on the childs information sheet. We will always contact emergency medical personnel first, if the nature of the emergency warrants immediate medical care.
The A Beka curriculum has designed a Jr. Kindergarten readiness program which prepares children to read through phonics instruction with one to two vowel words in small readers. Children learn number concepts 1 to 20 and counting from 1 to 100. The curriculum also includes manuscript writing, art, music, poetry, and language development activities preparatory to entering Kindergarten.
Jr. Academy also provides students with a wide variety of hands-on activities that encourage pre-writing skills, pre-reading skills, math skills, science skills, and social skills. The curriculum and lesson plans are designed to develop each childs imagination, social skills and intellectual awareness.
