Some details about me and my vision:
The greatest mission of fiction writers is to convey to the reader that palpable sense of magic--the magic we experience while traveling with our characters through their world. We are field reporters, observing the surroundings, the people, and the challenges our characters face. We strive to accurately report the characters' words and actions and to reveal the reasons behind their decisions, to provide the reader with a clear and privileged window onto the action, to give the reader a chance to feel a part of the scene, to become emotionally involved with the magic at hand.
I have read many stories that grabbed me by the collar, whisked me onto that magic ride, and didn't let me off until long after the story was over. I've also read several which hinted at magical, but delivered mundane. My wish is to join ranks with the first category.
On my journey toward this goal, I must acknowledge the support and constructive criticisms of my colleagues in the Florida Writers Association. Friends and family are invaluable in the moral support department, and I thank mine wholeheartedly and often. However, for more professional, unbiased critiques, there's no better middle ground. Writers Association members can read, critique, and catch mistakes ahead of time to keep the magic ride from jumping track before it ever reaches a publisher.
A prolonged sense of magic occurs when you maintain the idea that your perspective is special and therefore whatever you see has a special meaning. When I graduated from college, I moved to Mexico, where I lived for six years. Everything seemed special and alien to me for a long time. I was a true stranger in a strange land. When I moved back to the United States, so many things had changed, I again felt alien in my home country. These experiences show through in my characters' reactions to alien lands, because the magic, to me, has been very real.
Another way to bring magic to life is to observe something that wows you and try it for yourself. I've always been wowed by martial arts. A few years ago, I finally got up the courage to try Tae Kwon Do, and I've been dedicated to it ever since. I currently hold a black belt, 2nd Dan, and continue to work slowly toward the next level. My instructors are talented visionaries who bring new self-defense situations to practice every week. In writing about assassins and aggressors, the relevance is elemental.
For readers: if you get a sense of magical adventure when you read a book cover, if it seems to call to you, give it a chance. Read a few pages. If you're still surfing on the story after Chapter 1, consider taking it for a longer ride. Thanks for reading.
