I don't think I've ever had so much fun...or had so much to do! :-) The process of creating an album has been amazing. I am now in the throws of approving the song mixes done by Bobbie Bradley. It is so cool to hear my songs morphing through the creative process. But here's the good news everyone....the album is on schedule to be released at the VERY BEGINNING of November. Hooray!
Redwood Campmeeting 2010
August 11, 2010
I love Northern California, and I LOVE the Redwoods. On July 31st, Brooks and I joined the Faith For Today crew (Mike & Gayle Tucker, and Jennifer LaMountain) at the Redwood campmeeting, set deep in the Redwood forest. It was beautiful. The weather was crisp and clean (coming from the smog of SoCal) and we loved our time spent with this kind and receptive group of believers, huddled, at times, beneath blankets and raincoats but always open to the Lord's word through Pastor Mike's preaching, and message through the songs by Jennifer and myself. Pastor Mike (or...Uncle Mikey), your messages were dynamic and meaningful to me, and I know so many other people were touched and blessed.
This was a special weekend performance for me, since most of these songs I have not yet sung in concert. I have gone through them many times in the studio, but this was the premiere performance of many songs. They went great, and were so much fun to share. It was the first time to sing "In Between" - the song that I wrote that will be on this album....it was so much fun!
Thank you to Faith For Today for inviting us to participate in the celebration of FFT's 60 Year Anniversary. Congratulations! And thank you to the wonderful people at the Redwoods Campmeeting for having us on this special weekend!
General Conference
July 15, 2010
A few weeks ago, the SDA General Conference sessions were held in Atlanta Georgia. I was asked to sing a couple of songs on the stages in the exhibit halls. My dad and I sang our new duet called "Time" on the Hope Chanel stage, and I sang a song off of my new album called "You Love Me Like That" on the NAD (North American Division) stage. It was a really cool experience to sing for so many people in the exhibit hall. Thank you to Faith For Today for asking me to sing during their Lifestyle Magazine segment.
aaaaaand.......DONE! (with vocals)
June 22, 2010
Wow, last week was incredible! I spent the whole week at the studio in southern Illinois and completely enjoyed every second of it. I had the most amazing group of people surrounding me, and we all worked together so great. The first two days were the most saturated; recording eight songs (five on Tuesday!) Wow...lots of singing. I had to get as many done as possible while I had my vocal producer with me, and he only had until Tuesday to be in the studio. But all the time spent with him was amazing! He helped me to pour so much emotion and feeling into each song, and taught me a few cool (and necessary) techniques along the way. Scott Reed...you're great! THANK YOU! I also had my mom and dad around to help and refer to for their opinions here and there. They especially helped me with my final three songs. What a cool experience to work with my parents in the recording studio. Memories I will never forget; Laughter that will ring in my mind for years; Love that will warm my heart for a lifetime.
Dad was also recording a CD last week. It will be his eighth, and his BEST! I'm so thrilled with his song choices and vocal performance. I especially love his brilliant sound tracks, as they are gorgeously arranged by Lari Goss into a sea of orchestral emotion. These songs take my breath away. I was also honored and thrilled to take the position as vocal producer for Dad. And of course, mom was a sturdy and helpful producer as well. We had a blast helping Dad to really express and deliver these musical gems. It wasn't that hard though, because Dad is simply amazing!
I'm so grateful for the dynamic spiritual experience of last week, and the opportunity to record these songs and share them with whomever will listen :-). I think the CD will be out in September, and it will be named: Firefly. (by the way, I can't even tell you how many fireflies I saw in Illinois at night. It was such a sight!)
STUDIO - RECORDING VOCALS
June 11, 2010
So it's about time to get in the studio and crank out all the vocals for the 11 songs on my album. How many emotions are pulsing through my brain?...oh, about a million. But in the end, the only thing in my brain should be the thought of God sitting on the throne and hopefully being pleased with my efforts to praise Him. There are so many important, heavy and life altering issues going on in the world today...right now...so I should never be too concerned with the goal of vocal perfection on a little album. But what this little offering of songs can be in a heavy and and painful world, is a light of hope and comfort. So this I pray, for my little album...may it not reflect me, but reflect God. May it be helpful and healing to some, and peaceful but powerful to others. May it travel farther than I could have ever imagined and touch hearts of those whom I'll never know. May it never be for my gain, but for the gaining of souls into the Kingdom. May it be God's.
SONG WRITING
April 26, 2010
I have been inspired so much lately to write songs for my SECOND album. How silly is that...thinking about album number TWO before album number ONE is out. But I have decided that I'd like to put a lot more original songs on my next CD So it's better to start creating now! I've been really inspired by Sara Bareilles, Jonatha Brooke, and Owl City. It's also been so helpful that I have a piano in my house. So now I can sit down and let the music flow...I love it! Thank you my sweet husband for buying me a beautiful black piano!! Also, I've been collaborating with a friend from work who is a singer/songwriter. He wrote a guitar song and didn't have words, so I asked if I could take a shot at it. I really love how it has turned out! And the cool thing is...his style is something that I would have never come up with by myself. So, yay for diversity!
Here are some of the topics I'm working on:
-- Saying things without thinking (aka...putting my foot in my mouth...which happens often)
-- The challenge of reading the Bible regularly with all the other distractions of life
-- Struggling with depression but relying on the love of others to pull you through
-- How much I love iced tea
Haha, the last one's a joke. But I really do love iced tea. Cheers everyone!
Hope you'll tune in to Trinity Broadcasting Network this Thursday night and watch Dad and I sing "Vision of Tomorrow."
NEW FAVORITE SONG
Sunday April 11, 2010
Have you heard of Jonatha Brooke? She is so amazing. Her stuff from the '90's sounds so 'current' and her style completely challenges my understanding of what a song "should" sound like. Don't undertstand what I mean? GOOGLE her and search for the song "Ten Cent Wings." You'll also find an audio clip here: www.jonathabrooke.com/music/10-cent-wings
SONGS
Sunday, April 4, 2010
Well it's been a few weeks since I was at the studio in Illinois with all the musicians setting my rythm tracks and scratch vocals. I now have 10 amazingly awesome tracks to listen to at home and practice singing for the 'real thing' in a few months - which is, singing the final vocals for the CD! I'm nervous and excited and proud and humbled all at the same time through this process - and might I add a bit freaked out too! I tell you what...singing into a mic in the studio really exposes your flaws...ahh! But I have to continually remind myself that God is in the drivers seat of this whole project and I need not fear. He has a plan for all of the things I'm doing. I'm so honored that God has blessed me with this opportunity to record.
Nashville, SoundShop Studio
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Last Thursday and Friday I spent my time with Dad and Lari Goss in Nashville at the Historical SoundShop Studio (the oldest studio in Nashville, where hundreds of musicians and groups have recorded albums, from the Beatles, to Faith Hill, to Neil Diamond, and so many more!)
Lari Goss is producing my album and we spent the days going through my song selections and picking out the right ones for this project. We also set the keys, worked on arrangements and even did some writing (as we were working on the song that I have written). It was a great experience to finally be working on the music. I am really thrilled that I get to go through this whole process with Dad by my side. His album is going to be GREAT by the way :-).
So, in less than two weeks, Brooks and I will be traveling to Southern Illinois for some more studio time...yay! Ill be there for a few days to do scratch vocals to all the rhythm tracks (the piano, guitar, bass and drum stuff...which is basically all the instruments for the majority of my CD). Cant wait! Ill keep everyone posted on how things are going! :-)
