This website, launched in 2006 is your gateway to my progress in my veterinary science degree at the University of Liverpool. The need for a website arose from needing to raise £85,000 in tuition fees alone over the 5 years of the course. Currently I am about to start my fourth year at Liverpool, and still have a shortfall in fees, Due to hard work diligence and entrepreurial spirit it is considerably less of a shortfall than when I started this journey 4 years ago, but I could still do with your help ....... read on to find out more .....

Why ADOPTAVET?
2006 when ADOPTAVET was created was an incredibly hard year. Having been accepted on the vet course at Liverpool but then requiring such a vast amount of money was no joke. Unfortunately my parents are not millionaires so the bank of Mum and Dad was unable to meet all of the massive shortfall. A lot of serious soul searching and number crunching went into it and setting up this website was one result. I figured if 85,000 people donated one pound I'd be sorted!
So now in 2010 with a mixture of private sponsorship and grants, saving like a squirrel in autumn, working at Ladbrokes during holidays and term time, and donations from you guys I am a lot closer to the target. Thank you!

I have spent most of my life around animals of one kind or another and since the age of 7 have had the plan to be a vet. As I grew older my fascination was combined into many work experience placements in zoos, research labs, riding stables and horse racing organisations, and once 18 into full time jobs as a veterinary nurse in both small animal practices and equine practices.
After not securing a place at vet school after my A' levels I decided to follow the other thing I love, horse racing, by taking the fantastic degree in Equine Science and Thoroughbred Management at Oxford Brookes and Abingdon and Witney College.
Having achieved a 2:1 the vets at the Liphook Equine Hospital where I was working at the time gave me the idea of using that to apply to vet school. Having realised that 7 year old and her plans were still there I did so ..... and got in, which resulted in much rejoicing.... and then was presented with the bill .... which resulted in much head scratching......
Whilst top up fees have made all university courses £3000 per year Some vet schools are forced to charge £17,000 as the government only funds 75 places per year and vet schools can take about 100 students. £17,000 is the total amount required per year to train a veterinary surgeon as the course requires a great deal of specialization.
So despite veterinary science being a worthwhile career if a very demanding one finding £85,000 makes it all the more difficult. Since 2006 I have found a great deal of sponsorship but still have some way to go. Once I graduate as a vet, I would like to work in mixed practice possibly specialising in either horses or wildlife work.
