The Charity Sailing committee would like to thank 'Consolidated Pipe Carriers Pte Ltd' of Singapore, for their valued support during this event. Without them, our fundraising total, would be significantly less.
Sailing Report
The Roy Castle Foundation Regatta was on a cold but fine Saturday in October. The unusual northerly winds meant that all crew
members had to work doubly hard to keep themselves warm or be confined to the galley to make tea for the day.
The six Beneteau Océanis 37s made their way to the start line set in the central Solent which proved difficult for one particular boat.
Once the yacht finally found the fleet the Race Officer (Simon Nuding from www.rib-it.com, "we take your fun very seriously") set a
indward course to Cutter. The dedicated navigators of each boat had not quite got their bearings and decided to head towards a
buoy further up the river, past Cutter. Once they finally clapped eyes on the only yellow buoy in a sea of orange buoys the navigators
had finally got the swing of which direction they should be going in. It was fair to say that there were a few sheepish looks over the
finish line and Faux Pas shouting to the Committee Boat that they might have lived up to their boat name!
The competition was close at both ends of the fleet with a three way battle for first place and three way battle for last place.
By the end of the four races, all crews where starting to look like professional sailors. There was a significant reduction in the
number of wine glasses in the spinnakers and their jibes were far less cumbersome.
D'Artagnan was the true worthy winner of the day being consistently placed at the top of the fleet
Final Standings (after four races)
1. D'Artagnan
2. Creme De La Creme
3. Carte Blanche
4. Mon Ami
5. Faux Pas
6. Femme Fatale
The total raised for the 2010 Charity Sail was £5355, which is a considerable amount.
I would like to thank each and every person that either donated money, attended the
Black Tie Ball or took part in the sailing event.
Well done to you all. John Bird (Event Manager)

The 'Charity Sail' was inspired by John Bird, to help
raise vital funds for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer
Foundation in Liverpool. John's father died of Lung
Cancer in 1995 slightly after the Research Centre opened. He has organised a number of events for the Foundation
of which the Charity Sail is the most successful.
This will now become an annual event and we hope to attract more boats in it's second year and beyond.

Early detection is critical to the success of any treatment and the Foundation's research is helping to detect early signs of lung cancer, thus improving survival rates. Ultimately the charity is working towards implementing a screening programme across the UK.
The Foundation's support groups give those affected by lung cancer a chance to meet others in a similar situation, to learn more about lung cancer and to talk to specialist nurses.
The freephone help line
(0800 358 7200) provides supports services and our patient information booklets are free of charge for those affected.
The Foundation provides a stop smoking service through 'Roy Castle Fag Ends'. Work is underway to prevent young people from starting smoking by educating them on the dangers of smoking through our Kids against Tobacco Smoke and Anti Tobacco Youth Campaigns.
The 'Look After your Lungs' programme offers workplace health promotion and the Foundation also trains health care professionals in a variety of lung cancer, tobacco control and health related issues.
The Foundation receives no Government funding for it's research work and relies on the support of companies and individuals to raise money.
Roy Castle courageously devoted the last twelve months of his life to raising funds for the Foundation and the charity needs your help to continue its vital work in the fight against lung cancer.
You can make a difference and help save lives.

The Foundation works hard to influence politicians
and all those who make decisions which impact on
lung cancer and those affected by it.
