Tipmont REMC was formed in 1938 and began building electric distribution lines to serve the rural folks who lived outside of town and never had electricity because investor owned utilities (owned by stockholders, for profit) would not build electric lines in rural areas because it was too expensive and they could not make enough profit. The REMC (Rural Electric Membership Corporation) was formed by a local group of citizens who wanted power to be installed to serve the rural areas outside smaller towns and communities. The electric co-operative was granted low interest loans by the federal government by the REA (Rural Electrification Association).
