Throughout the Prospect.2 Biennial, the education and public programs department has worked to encourage the incorporation of contemporary art in the classroom, as well as contemporary art making itself. The Prospect.2 Student Biennial showcases the results of these initiatives and continues our efforts to promote the creative work of New Orleans budding young artists. This website, designed by Newman student Jessica Richard, illuminates how the youth of New Orleans feel about their city. Through the creative expressions of photography and poetry, we are able to get a glance at how New Orleans inspires her youth.Hi! I'm Jessica Richard, a senior at Isidore Newman School. I first became involved with Prospect New Orleans when I decided to make Prospect.2 the subject of my journalism project. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to learn more about this incredible organization and see the amazing exhibits around the city. I am so thrilled to have gotten another chance to work with Prospect New Orleans on this website. I hope you enjoy the website and the wonderful work of these talented students! The Prospect.2 Student Biennial opens to the public on Saturday, January 14 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Prospect Visitor Center, 1036 Esplanade Avenue. The exhibit features work made in response to and collaboration with various Prospect.2 artists, and features artwork from students throughout New Orleans. Exhibit highlights include a 16-panel mural created collaboratively by Prospect.2 artist Bruce Davenport and members of the Roots of Music Crusaders band; photography by students from Kids Rethink New Orleans Schools, shot in the style of Prospect.2 artist Lorraine O’Grady and based on workshops with the New Orleans Kid Camera Project and the Prospect.2 Education Department; photography submissions from New Orleans-area students inspired by Prospect.2 artist William Pope.L; and a digital sound installation created by Prospect.2 artist Dan Tague and students from Lusher Charter School. Students in grades 7-12 submitted these photographs, from throughout the New Orleans area. This work was created in direct response to William Pope.Ls Blink and the questions, what is uniquely New Orleans? and why do you love New Orleans? Blink debuted from sunset to sunrise on the opening day of the Prospect.2 biennial, October 22, 2011. Pope.Ls piece was created from more than a thousand photography submissions from New Orleans residents. The photographs submitted for Blink were in response to the questions, When you dream of New Orleans, what do you dream? and when you wake up in the morning, what do you see? Building from these original questions, we wanted to highlight how New Orleans youth visualize our city. These photos present a glimpse of how our children see New Orleans, and how they wish for others to see it too.

Prospect.2 artist Dan Tague and creative writing students at the Lusher Charter School created these haikus in a collaborative projectBon Enfantsthat was originally exhibited as part of the exhibit, The World According to New Orleans, curated by Dan Cameron and shown at the Marfa Ballroom in early 2011. These young poets exquisitely capture the nuance of New Orleans in poems that act more as flashes of the city than definitions of it. There is hope, beauty, despair, curiosity, pain, whimsy, and humor in their words, much like in the city itself.
