I am a photographer and mixed-media artist born on a small island off the coast of Texas back in 1982. The island is best known for being consumed by the 1900 Storm, and then later by Hurricane Ike, in which we bounced back from - leaving the once lively town in ruins. I always found the island to have a hauntingly beautiful aura about it, despite the obvious poverty-stricken landscape. The place that raised me I compare to New Orleans – if New Orleans was given a valium and a shot of Tequila.Growing up in such a desolate place awarded me time to hide inside my head and focus on my art: whether it was painting, photography, or dissecting dolls only to fill them with cotton, chicken wire, or even raw meat.Anatomy and biology have been obsessions of mine ever since I could remember. I find the human body, from synthetic (dolls) to warm flesh, to be the best canvas and subject for my projects. I like to trap images of raw emotion with my camera, freezing that perfect moment of ecstasy, pain, joy, sadness and apathy. I am always clutching my camera in case I see the perfect moment at the diner or on the city bus. I honor the photojournalist Steve McCurry for his brilliant work, at the same time praise Joel-Peter and Gottfried Helnwein for their bravery to capture the things they do.As a child, I never thought what I was doing or capturing was strange. My parents were great in letting me express myself and never put me down for being different, in fact, they encouraged it. As an adult it’s sometimes hard to remember that we once had the innocence of being free. We didn’t feel the pressures of being “normal” and we just did what made us happy. I’m trying to regain that carefree inner child – “strange” or not, with my work. Won’t you follow me down the rabbit hole for a bit?
