Our goal is to reduce the number of deaths from heart diseases in India per year and furthermore make the community as efficient as possible.
Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, and always start with the person nearest you. ~Mother Teresa
As I sat on the bamboo hammock aside my grandfather, sweat trickling down the indentations in our necks from the humidity of that lazy summer day in India, I gazed out at his field of crops with admiration. The fruits of his labor fed many in his small village and his selfless generosity never ceased to amaze me. Little did I know my time with him was so limited.
A few years ago, my grandfather, Jaswant Singh Ahluwalia, passed away from a heart attack due to a lack of immediate medical aid in the heart of his village. As any death does, the loss of my grandfather caused great grief- to me, my family, and his entire village. However, it took me a few years to realize that this type of loss was affecting many more families than just my own. After doing my research, I found out that thousands of people, more than I could have ever imagined, were dying from heart diseases and the inability to afford treatments; all I could think was, Ive got to save at least one of those thousands.
Last year, I independently created a non-profit charity, the Heart2Heart Charity Foundation, in honor of my grandfather. The purpose of it is to provide financial aid for all patients in need of Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) and also help the community in other ways. For now, I have decided to send this financial aid to patients at the Om Spero Hospital in Haryana, India, but I hope for the charity to help many other regions in the years to come. Alongside that, donations collected will also be aiding that region in India with education, jobs, and other health issues. I hope to continue putting the foundation's full effort towards helping this community become as efficient as possible before moving on to the next.

"Coronary heart disease in Indians has been shown to be premature, occurs at an early age and is more aggressive, extensive and malignant. 52.2% of deaths due to CVD occur below the age of 70 years in India as compared with only 22.8% in the developed world" (1)(2)
"New research published in The Lancet finds that India will bear 60% of the world's heart disease burden in the next two years. In addition, researchers have determined that compared to people in other developed countries, the average age of patients with heart disease is lower among Indian people and Indians are more likely to have types of heart disease that lead to worse outcomes.
The leading cause of death in the world is ischemic heart disease, a condition characterized by reduced blood supply to the heart that is usually due to coronary artery disease. In 2001 alone, some 7.1 million deaths were attributed to ischemic heart disease, 80% of which were in relatively poor countries. Medical and public health professionals expect that in developing countries, there will be a 137% and 120% increase in the disease for males and females, respectively, whereas these predictions lie in the 30% to 60% range for developed countries." (3)
This is why India has become our first and foremost focus. The cost for each CABG is a minimum of US $6,600 to the maximum amount of US $9,800. (4) It is our goal to assist in paying for as many surgeries as possible with the help of our supporters.

Here are a few ways you can help right from home:
1) Collect bottles and cans! Find a local recycling center and exchange your bottles and cans for money. You may not get much money right away, but every cent you can send us gets the charity one step closer to saving another person's life.
2) Host a small party at your house with a small entrance fee. It's a fun and easy way to make some money for the charity. Just remember to tell your friends the reason why you're charging them so they don't think it's a scam!
3) Send us a message and we'll send you a Heart2Heart Charity Foundation cup that you can keep at work or school.
We appreciate any and all help you can you can offer. If you have any other ideas we can post onto our website, please send us a message by clicking on the 'Contact' tab above.
