J.D. Smith is a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. She started playing the guitar and composing songs at the age of 11, following in the footsteps of her grandmother, uncle and sister who were also muscians. In the early 90's she met her back up singer, Sherri Tanner, through Project Safe, (an organization in Athens Georgia that helps battered women) while they were both leaving their abusers. They later formed J.D. Smith & Company and began playing many of the downtown venues in Athens Georgia. Besides becoming best friends, they both discovered that there was a certain magic happening when their voices intertwined. Also, in that time period, some of the musicians that she had the honor of performing with were, Randall Bramblett, Rick Fowler, Joe Ionno (Dr. Hook), Neil Patman, and Bill Barry (R.E.M.)

J.D.'s first Cassingle was released in 1992. The two song cassette included one of her original songs, "In The Dark" (A Song for Battered Women). In The Dark" is an expression of J.D.'s own abuse and how she found herself. like so many other women, hiding her bruises. She wrote this song while she was still living in the Project Safe shelter. In 2010 J.D. decided to re-record, "In The Dark" on her new E.P., Conscious Earth, with John Keane at John Keane Studios in Athens, Georgia. This collection includes a re-release of, "In The Dark" along with 6 other original songs. This E.P. has a Contemporary Indie "Poppy" sound . Many talented musicians are on the E.P. John Keane performs his usual tasteful guitar parts and even gives a vocal back up performance on her song, "Headin' For A Heartbreak." Randall Bramblett gives us all such a treat when he tickles the ivories for 3 songs on the E.P. Andy Carlson's steals your heart with his heavenly flowy strings. Nathan Sheppard sings with his signature voice on "Sail" and "Conscious Earth," and Sherri Tanner adds such beautiful harmony with her angelic voice. Last but not least J.D. sings her songs with a voice of spirit and passion.

J.D. Smith plans to raise money through her E.P. for Project Safe and hopes to touch women all over the world through song. The music is available online through C.D. Baby and iTunes. Every purchase of the C.D. and MP3 Downloads sold will benefit Project Safe. J.D. says " I will always be an advocate for battered women. I just want to give back and let other women know that they can reach their goals and dreams after being abused." Then she said, "This is music with a cause, and I hope you will want to be a part of it."
