Marsh Restoration
slide 2 The Pointe Mouillee Marsh Restoration
Pointe Mouillee (pronounced "Point Moo-yay") is a spit of land that jets into Lake Erie near the mouth of the Huron River. Pointe Mouillee is one of the largest fresh water marsh restoration projects in the world - the result of a gigantic earth- moving/dike-building project. It consists of wetlands, diked marshes, and river bayous.
The wetland dikes make excellent hiking trails, although visitors should be aware that construction and maintenance traffic occurs throughout the year. Site maps are available at the area headquarters.
Even after a major construction project, it doesn't take long before natural vegetation grows back, providing habitat for many kinds of wetland wildlife. Each year the Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival Committee puts on their annual waterfowl festival at the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area Headquarters. All proceeds go towards the restoration of the Pointe Mouillee Marsh.
Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival and the Michigan Duck Hunters Tournamnet needs your help to preserve the Pointe Mouillee Marsh. By restoring and protecting the state's most critical waterfowl habitats and a major hub in the Detroit Rivier International Wildlife Refuge, we can inspire future generations to continue our mission.
Together we can make a difference.
slide 4 The Department of Natural Resources will co-host the 63rd Annual Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival Sept. 11-12 at Pointe Mouillee State Game Area (PMSGA). Activities begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and run through 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
Located at the mouth of the Huron River at Lake Erie, the PMSGA is the largest freshwater marsh restoration project in North America and one of Michigan's premier waterfowl hunting areas. All proceeds from the festival benefit wetland restorations and wildlife habitat improvements at Pointe Mouillee.
The weekend includes the Michigan Duck Hunters' Tournament, sponsored by Cabela's, with hunters competing in shooting and boat-racing events. The Midwest Decoy Contest includes decoys, fish, and bird carvers from all over North America. The Wildlife Art Show features artists, crafters, and suppliers from all corners of the USA and Canada.
Hunters can buy, sell or swap goods with outdoorsmen from around the Midwest at the "Greatest Outdoor Trading Post," which features more than 180 exhibitor booths selling and trading equipment and supplies. Interested vendors can contact Bob Kemper at (734) 379-0102.
Fish-decoy carving, duck-decoy carving, fly-tying and small-boat building are among the daily demonstrations. Dog retriever events are slated for both days with hunting seminars scheduled for Saturday. Activities for youngsters include a BB gun shoot, an archery shoot, face painting, clowns and waterfowl-related games.
slide 5 The Midwest Goose Calling Championship, sponsored by Zink Calls, will be held Saturday at noon with a first prize of $1,000. The Midwest Duck Calling Championship will be held Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. with four separate contests. Winners are eligible for the World Duck Calling Contest in Stuttgart, Arkansas.

slide 6 History
(information on the History of Pointe Mouille and the Michigan Duck Hunters Tournament provided by James Marsh, with articles provided by Michigan Out-Of-Doors publication)
Early French settlers were the first to discover this marshy delta at the mouth of the Huron River where it empties into Lake Erie, just south of Detroit. Appropriately named Pointe Mouillee, which translates to "wet point", the name, while strange to the ears of succeeding generations, has identified the area ever since. This area became synonomous with excellent opportunities for wing shooting among well-heeled sportsmen of the gas-light era, and was established in the late 19th century by a top-drawer social group of men and made into a hunting club.
Founded in 1875, "The Big Eight Club" was an aristocratic wildfowling club founded by eight wealthy businessmen. Four years later, in 1879, the clubs name was changed to the Pointe Mouille Shooting Club, and its membership grew from eight to ten. For 70 years this organization was regarded as the premier hunting club in Michigan, and was well known throughout this state, and many others. Membership in such an aristocratic organization was deamed as highly fashionable at the time, and people eagerly accepted invites to the club to enjoy the many game hunting opportunities that were available.
slide 7 In 1945, the Michigan Department of Conservation aquired this 2,608 acre piece of property for $75.00 per acre, and its famed channels were opened to the public for hunting. The first season drew an estimated 10,000 wing shooters, from every walk of life, looking to part-take in the wonderful hunting opportunities available at Pointe Mouillee.
Over the years, this once splendid marsh has declined due to many changes in the natural state of affairs. In the early 1930's, dams began to be constructed on the Huron River, altering the natural flow of the river, and grealty reducing the sediments in the river that helped replenish the natural offshore barrier beach which protected the marsh from Lake Erie. In the late 1960's and the early 1970's, high water levels, wave action, and ice all worked together to destroy the barrier and the marsh.
