Genre'sKids With Cancer FundA mission to help families living through childhood cancer - emotionally, financially and spiritually Genre's Kids With Cancer Fund is a foundation formed by Genre's (like Henry with a G) parents and some friends who love Genre very much. Genre was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) on Memorial Day, 2009. He was 8 yrs. old. Since that day, so much generosity and love has been shown to this family not only by friends and relatives but by complete strangers as well. It is the hope of the Baker family to give back some of that generosity and love by assisting families dealing with childhood cancers in any way we can - emotionally, financially and spiritually. Our burden has been bearable because of our faith. It is our most sincere desire to show families suffering through childhood cancers that there is hope. You can walk any path on any journey as long as you are able to rely on God. When Genre came home from the hospital he said that he wouldn't have made it through that initial fourteen day hospital stay without his Nintendo DS. He said his game made him feel calm and happy. It helped him escape the insanity that had become his world. That day, he asked me if there was any way he could make sure that every child who is diagnosed with ALL at Children's Hospital of Pgh. has a DS to play. I didn't know how, but I told him that we'd make it happen. Shortly after that conversation, Genre's Kids With Cancer Fund was born in the fall of 2009. We are blessed to be able to provide a handheld video game system to every child diagnosed with cancer at CHP, who does not already have one! If the child has a system, we are happy to provide two new games to help them pass the time during the many hours of treatment and transfusion. These games are priceless to our son during a long treatment or during the times when he is hospitalized for weeks at a time.Genre's ideas kept growing. He talked about free golf lessons for kids with cancer and gas cards for the families who live so far from the oncology clinic.
