‘Beyond Flying’: A Pupil Voice Project in England.
This action research was carried out in Eglinton Primary School, Plumstead, focusing on why boys in nursery was not accessing the creative aspects of the classroom. With musician Kate Heath, they devised a creative curriculum outside of the classroom and recorded the pupils’ responses.This action research was part of the Creative Action Research Awards 2 (CARA 2). This report is intended for teachers, governors, arts practitioners and any agency that wants to explore opportunities for foundation stage boys to be creative in their learning and development.
This action research was conducted as part of the project “Beyond Flying” with Scarabeus Theatre. This work looks at producing an arts project with aerials and physical theatre in a secondary school and the challenges of incorporating a “comprehensive” ethos, meaning a wide range of abilities and age groups, with pupils taking key decisions.The project and research have been produced by Creative Partnerships. The published paper will be of interest to arts professionals and teachers interested in pupil voice.
Published September 2009 by Enabling Education Network, page 16 and 17 contains an edited summary of the action research “The Challenge of Engaging Young People within a ‘Comprehensive’ Creative Model.” The main theme of the 2009 newsletter is ‘life-long learning’ and this includes early childhood, alternative forms of education, and post-secondary education. Countries featured include Armenia, Australia, England, Kyrgyzstan, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Nepal, Niger, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Trinidad and Tobago.
