History
Chester H. Pond
Almeda Mary Pond
Alice Pond
Louise Pond
When Chester Pond was a young man, he moved to New York City and gave his entire time and attention over to invention. His inventions were electrical devices and equipment. It was at this period of his life that he formed a strong attachment for Thomas A. Edison, a personal friend. Mr. Pond stood at Mr. Edison's side when Edison turned on the current that lighted the first incandescent lights, and in the company of Edison he witnessed the first successful attempt of Edison to move a car by electricity.
One of his inventions was a self winding clock, which could be seen in all Western Union offices and other public places in his day. He is credited with over 17 patents. Other notable inventions include the use of the telegraph to synchronize clocks in railroad depots, and telegraph wire insulators.
While Chester Pond and family were living in New York City, they would vacation during the summer in North Woodstock, New Hampshire. Chester traveled frequently, so it was mostly his wife, Almeda Mary Pond, and his two daughters Louise and Alice that were in North Woodstock. Hiking the mountains seemed to be a favorite of hers and the daughters. It is believed that it was these visits to that area led them to build the cottage in Waterville Valley
