Modern Pterosaurs
"Pterosaurs in southwest Pacific" refers not to fossils but living modern pterosaurs. In the 1990's, ropen expeditions in Papua New Guinea . . . What is a ropen? On Umboi Island, in those villages where they speak Kovai, "ropen" refers to a flying animal or spirit that gives off a light sometimes, when it flies. A superstitious legend, only fictional? Yes and no.In the 1990's, Carl Baugh and Paul Nation, of Texas, and a couple other Americans, visited a few natives of Umboi Island, for they were checking out rumors that pterosaurs may be living in Papua New Guinea. Baugh and Nation were amazed at what they heard from eyewitnesses. The ropen is not just a myth or tradition. Some of the natives have seen the flying creatures that seem to have a brilliant bioluminescent glow.In 2004, the forensic videographer Jonathan Whitcomb interviewed eyewitnesses on Umboi Island, verifying the credibility of all but one of the native eyewitnesses.A few weeks after Jon Whitcomb's expedition, two more cryptozoologists (Woetzel and Guessman) interviewed eyewitnesses on Umboi. One of those Americans, David Woetzel, saw the glow of a ropen, as it flew towards the crater lake Pung.Contrary to careless remarks by some critics, the reports of living pterosaurs in the southwest Pacific do not come from misidentifications of the fruit bat called "flying fox." The ropen has a long tail and holds itself upright on tree trunks, not upsidedown like bats. In addition, the ropen eats, not fruit, clams or fish or (on occasion) carrion. Also, most reports of ropens make it obvious that it is much larger than fruit bats.Live Pterosaurs in America (cryptozoology book)"Nocturnal pterosaurs have always lived among us, but hidden by something. Enter now the realm of a new branch of cryptozoology, a branch overshadowed by the dogma of a "universal extinction." How did scientists miss living pterosaurs? Get the answers here, hidden secrets about how these amazing flying creatures of the night have gone mostly unreported: Until recently, almost nobody would listen to eyewitnesses; but for the past seven years many of them have been interviewed by the author of this book."(Photograph of Lake Pung, Umboi Island, Papua New Guinea, by Garth Guessman, explorer-cryptozoologist)
Hodgkinson
Sighting by Hodgkinson
The World War II veteran Duane Hodgkinson has been a flight instructor for many years, in Livingston, Montana. But to many cryptozoologists, he is known as an eyewitness of a giant living pterosaur in New Guinea, in 1944.The two soldiers were looking at large ants on a log at the edge of a clearing. The lull in fighting the Japanese around Finschhafen, on the mainland of what was then called "New Guinea," allowed the two men to get permission to visit a nearby native village. They were startled when a wild pig ran through the clearing, but within a few second they saw something far more startling. A "huge" thing appeared at the far side of the clearing. It ran for several steps as it flapped its wings, soon taking off into the air. Private Hodgkinson at first assumed it must have been a bird as it was about to get into the air, but he soon noticed strange details. It was about the size of a small private plane, with no sign of feathers. Hodgkinson's attention was drawn to the head, for a long thin appendage came out the back of the head, reminding him of the "pterodactyl" in the Alley Oop newspaper cartoons. In recent years, this World War II veteran has given cryptozoologists many details about his 1944 sighting. There is no reasonable explanation for misidentifying a fruit bat, for the tail of the creature was "at least" ten to fifteen feet long. There is no reasonable explanation for misidentifying a bird with long legs that look like a tail, for the feet were running on the ground when they first saw the creature, not stretched-out-out behind it.There is no reasonable cause to suspect gross size-exaggeration, for the men were in the same jungle clearing as the "pterodactyl," and that clearing was only about one hundred feet across.
