Welcome to our world, the land of Shelterwood, the place we call home. We are Pam and Wally, passionate high school teachers, compassionate donkey caregivers, and gentle walkers upon the Earth. We are the makers of maple syrup, kayakers of Lake Katchewanooka, and players of the guitar and bodhran. We see the world for all of its humour, grace and whimsy; and hope to leave the world a better place than when we first entered it. Welcome to our world. It is lovely to have you here.

We were married on August 24th, 2002, as our family and friends gathered around us. Every year we honour that connection with a simple ceremony of two held in the forest behind our home, Shelterwood, near Bobcaygeon, Ontario. We kneel, entwine our fingers, and repeat our vows as we did that day years ago. Our wedding day was a true celebration of our friendship, our happiness and our love. As we journey together as wedding photographers, we are touched by how unique each wedding is. We remember the creativity and effort that went into each invitation, the ceremony, the giveaways for our own wedding. We remember the pure emotion we danced through that day. We see that creativity and emotion in every wedding we touch now. We celebrate the magic that evolves from the love of two people. "We dream lots and we dream
Fireflies and Turtle Dreams is a 2002 Linwood cedar cottage on Lake Katchewanooka, 5 minutes from the village of Lakefield and 15 minutes from Peterborough. This eco-friendly home features a geothermal heating and cooling system for great winter heat and cool summer central air-conditioning provided by the Earth. It sleeps eleven comfortably and peacefully on eco-friendly mattresses and pillows. The Eagles Nest is the master bedroom on the second floor with a 4 poster solid pine queen bed, a full wall of windows facing the lake, and vaulted ceiling. It even has its own balcony, three stories up from the ground. There are two other bedrooms on the second floor; the Tea Party Room, with a queen canopy bed, and the Inuksuk Room with a double and a twin bed. Enjoy a bath in the upstairs bathrooms soaker tub. The main floor is host to a beautiful kitchen that opens to the Santa Fe inspired dining room on one side and living room on the other. There is a bedroom with a double futon on the mainfloor, as well as a 3 piece bathroom with shower. The screened-in sunroom is a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast or an afternoon nap. It leads to the mainfloors porch complete with picnic table and barbeque. The lower level has a bedroom with double bed, a living room area, and a laundry room. There is a full walkout from the lower level to the yard. The outdoor fire pit is the perfect place to enjoy smores and stories well into the night. If you're lucky, the fireflies may come to dance with you. The sandy beach provides hours of sand-castle-building quality time for the young and the young at heart, while the purple swing and the hammock down on the shore allow for the ultimate in relaxation. Swim out to the floating dock or snooze on the 60 foot cedar dock. The cottage has a tree fort complete with rope bridge entry and bucket-access for pirate-style lunches to be hoisted up, and there are swings too. When you arrive, your beds will be made up with fresh linens with a hand-made chocolate turtle on each pillow. You'll find some local goodies in the kitchen, including a bottle of Kawartha Winery's wine, a loaf of bread from Grany's Bakery, some Turtles fudge from the Kawartha Fudge Factory, a tub of Kawartha Dairy ice cream (your favourite flavour would be...?), and some of our own maple syrup. The cedar dock is a wonderful place to unwind before you paddle off into the sunset in one of our kayaks. Two uninhabited islands are moments away from the cottage by kayak and it is there you will see turtles sunning themselves on rocks and branches, herons, and kingfishers, and, if you're lucky, the resident bald eagle family. Curl up by the fire with a favourite book or fall asleep on a hammock. You might even want to escape to the Lorax's Cabin, which sleeps three on warm summer evenings. Every decision we have made in creating this oasis has been made with the Earth in mind, but this does not mean we have scrimped on luxury. donkey sanctuary
Cinnamon is my best friend, my confidant, my warmest hug (shhhh, don't tell Wally). She reminds me of everything important in this world. She was born on July 16th, 1997 -exactly one week after Tobi's birthday and one week before mine -and the very same year and month as Chloe. She was born to Sire: Bridgewater Red Supreme and Dam: Peanuts and came from the Milwain family's Josh and Justin one very cold January's day in 2003. She has a baby nearby our home named Midnight. She was our first donkey and Nishiime, Joe and Reilly honoured her with her very own flag which flies from the barn during our summer "Camp Cinnamons". This past summer she lay down under the warm sun in one of her favourite rolling circles. I tip toed out to her and snuggled in for what turned out to be one of my most favourite life moments so far. I massaged her back and neck and she slowly lowered her head into my lap. She snored with a smile on her face! I eventually put my head next to hers and joined her in her dreaming -just for a moment. The most peaceful moment ever."Come on little one. Come inside for dinner." My favourite part of every day is when we go out with 7 bowls full of various foods to feed our girls and Huey. I open the back door and call these words to Nana-April and I wait patiently for her to make her wide circle from behind everyone else to greet me at the door with a little nudge. She makes her way into her stall to munch on her dinner while the others get their dented stainless steel bowls full of food outside. She's spoiled and she expects nothing less from us. When she's done, she pushes the door open with her nose and joins everyone else for the second course: hay. Nana-April reminds me of my Nana-January in her love of life and her strength. She may be tiny, but she is determined to be seen as tall. She was born on April 18th, 2006 and joined us soon afterwards. She is my playmate, my inner-child, all covered in lush grey fur with an Irish cross on her back. She is the cutest thing ever! We still hope to adopt Nana's Mama and Grandmother someday and save them from the green water and their over-grown hooves.Huey is my knight in shining armour. He came to us the same year I got to meet Ryan Clarke in my Grade 11 Photography class and I am so very grateful for how deeply they have both touched my heart. Huey and Kirby were escorted to our home by the love of Sonja and Bill Shields into the night of June 18th, 2008. We let Huey and Kirby huddle together in a shared stall in our little barn for the first couple of days and then we let them out to meet their new family. I went down to take off their harnesses once everyone had settled down. May, Cinnamon and Nana-April were NOT impressed that I was going to interact with "them". It all happened in slow motion as they formed a line and walked slowly towards us. Huey swung his famous hind quarters to defend himself and I was the recipient of the kick. The welt that quickly appeared on my shin was affectionately dubbed my "Huey lump" and I was honestly sad when, after about 4 months, it was gone. Huey's birthday is June 1st, 1997, in honour of Bucket List's Morgan Freeman.Kirby is gentleness, love, and contentment. Her birthday is April 3rd, 1993 in honour of Jane Goodall. When she arrived at our home, there were rumours that she may be pregnant -by a miniature, no less! One day when Nana-April was in heat (which is about 90% of the time), she decided to "check out" Kirby. It made me laugh. Nana had to stand on her tippy-hooves just to be able to reach up to Kirby's cow-spotted back. The idea seems absurd! Kirby is silent on the matter. We'll see what transpires come spring.In the book "Travels in a Donkey Trap", Daisy Baker wrote "Somewhere among the deep-banked lanes of Devon an elderly lady rides by herself in a blue and red trap, drawn by a small brown donkey. The donkey pauses to crop the grass under the hedges. The woman scarcely wakes from her daydream. They are in no hurry. They are content." I can picture Kirby pulling me along the backroads of Ontario, happy to munch on some apples from Grampa's orchard. "Free The Children was founded by 12-year-old Craig Kielburger in 1995 when he gathered 11 school friends to begin fighting child labour. Today, Free The Children is the world's largest network of children helping children through education, with more than one million young people involved in our programs in 45 countries." On May 19th, Craig came to IE Weldon SS, where Wally and I teach. We had the honour of hearing him speak to our kids, sharing his story, and asking them to make a difference with their own lives. It was a powerful day. We are priviledged to be with young bright souls every day and we are grateful for them. We love watching them be positive forces in our world -in our lives.:)
Thirteen Moons Culinary Wellness Retreat for Women is one of my most favourite places to be in the whole world. Louise Racine has created a space for women to gather, grow, laugh, and learn. I had the honour of being a part of the Talking and Drumming Circle at Thirteen Moons' 10th Anniversary and I was touched by the honest connection she has made with so many women and the difference her dreams have made in other people's lives. Her food is beyond YUM! and her hospitality is heart-felt and pure. And you should get a copy of the "Thirteen Moons Cookbook"! It lives on my kitchen counter because we use it so often.:)
"Built by Scottish stone masons and completed in 1869, this elegant red brick building stood as a sanctuary for worshippers for more than 100 years. The innovative conversion to both a home and unique event space began in 2002. Its owner, Peter L Weninger, reconfigured this historical site. Notorious for his green designs and using recucled materials, Peter has converted the brick church into an enchanting domain."We met Jen Drapeau in January of this year and we knew immediately that we had found one of those people in the world who changes you for the better just by being herself. The Brick Churck is the most stunning place I have ever seen. The details are perfect, the space is cozy and open and loving, and Jen is amazing. We were thrilled when she asked us to team up with her to photograph weddings and other special events at the Brick Church. How lucky would anyone be to marry there? :)
Since 1992, The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada has been a refuge for donkeys, mules and hinnies who have been neglected or abused, or who can no longer be cared for by their owners. The Sanctuary rescues the donkey with hooves so long it lives in constant pain and cannot walk. It saves a terrified mule shivering in a pen in a slaughterhouse. It offers a home to a much-loved donkey whose aging owners can no longer provide adequte care. After years of suffering and neglect, the Sanctuary provides these animals with a welcome and often life-saving peaceful haven.
