What is STEP?
The STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) is an education program funded by the National Science Foundation with the aim of increasing the quality, quantity and diversity of students pursuing and obtaining their bachelor degrees in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). In 2006, STEP was one of the only 15 selected projects from over 140 project proposals reviewed by the NSF, who awarded Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi with a five-year grant to pursue the project. In STEP, students become a part of a learning community, where they are given support by their STEP professors, mentors and fellow students. STEP classes take a more analytical approach towards education. Getting you to think is our main priority! For this reason, a major component of STEP is Math, but not the Math you're probably used to from High School. In STEP, Math classes are much less focused on the memorization of formulas and more focused on getting you to think about problems and come up with solutions. Because of this, even if you don't use some of the concepts you learn in STEP Math classes, you will most definitely walk away with better critical thinking skills.
Why Join?
If you are planning on studying a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics oriented subject while at TAMUCC, STEP is a great way of getting a strong conceptual and analytical foundation for your future studies. You also get more support than you normally would have, which can be particularly important during your Freshman year. Each STEP class has a dedicated mentor who is available to answer questions during class. The mentors also hold sessions where you can go and get extra help, and since the mentors know exactly what is going on in your classes, you need not waste time explaining an assignment to them. In addition, the mentors progress with you while your in STEP, so you really have a chance to get to know them.
The mentors are more than just tutors, however. Your first year in college can be difficult, and the mentors are always there to talk or help you out with whatever issue you may be having (e.g. a difficult roommate).
How to Join?
To join you must be an incoming freshman at Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi and enrolled as a major in one of the STEM fields. To join, email Dr. Giraldo at Jose.Giraldo_tamucc.edu.
