Coastal White German Shepherd Dog (WGSD) Rescue Referral was founded in 2005 with the mission to raise funds to assist other rescues with taking in White German Shepherd Dogs coming from Animal Control facilities, shelters and individuals that would not normally be rescued due to medical or behavioral issues. Often times dogs are senselessly killed at shelters just because they have heartworms, or need a special surgery that Animal Control facilities, shelters, individuals or rescues cannot afford. Coastal WGSD Rescue Referral partners with local and national German Shepherd Rescues and all breed rescues to help give these deserving dogs and puppies another chance at life. We do so by listing them on our site, networking these dogs with other local and national rescues and funding WGSDs with special needs or behavioral issues by selling WGSD and other pet-related items. All proceeds go towards helping to defray the costs of expensive treatments and surgeries.

Our site, www.coastalwgsdrr.org will stay up until the URL expires, so please continue to use it for links to other rescues and useful information.As Co-Founders of Coastal WGSD Rescue Referral, Annmarie & I have been in this business for over 12 years. As much as it kills us to theoretically walk away from an organization we built with our love and passion for White German Shepherds, we have both reached a point in our lives where we need to say goodbye the trials and tribulations of operating such an expansive organization with dwindling resources.Coastal WGSD Rescue Referral was developed in 2005 after being involved in national White Shepherd rescue for several years. As most of you know, rescue is not only a financially taxing, but an emotionally taxing venture. It takes some time before the mentality changes from trying to "save them all" to "just this one more dog" consumes your every waking moment. We pride ourselves with the fact that we personally rescued hundreds of dogs through fostering, transporting and financing dogs within Coastal WGSD Rescue Referral and helping to finance dogs that other rescues could otherwise not afford to save.Obviously, in some sense, we will always be involved in White German Shepherd Dog rescue. I guess the fact that Annmarie and I were halfway across the country from each other was always a challenge, but anyone that knows us. also knows that, in rescue, that doesn't really mean much! The bigger the challenge, the more intense was the reward.. Annmarie and I have been in rescue, collectively, over 20 years and we have both operated nationally (with international connections) and locally. Although we have refined our ability to network, cross post and courtesy list dogs requiring rescue, sadly, there are just too many White German Shepherds and other dogs in need. We consistently receive pleas for all variations of German Shepherds and are often asked why we only take in White German Shepherds. Several years ago, many German Shepherd rescues would only take in purebred, traditional German Shepherd Dogs. Often, the White German Shepherd was often overlooked or left behind. For some rescues, it wasn't an intentional oversight, it was just the way White German Shepherds were perceived. In today's world of rescue, most GSD rescues take in ANY German Shepherd in need, regardless of color, demeanor or age. Even if the dog was only part German Shepherd, we still found ourselves trying to save them all! We prided ourselves in accurately matching our rescue dogs with the right potential foster or adopter with the skilled confidence that a permanent match had been made.When we originally formed Coastal WGSD Rescue Referral, we had a mission of merely raising funds to help other rescues save dogs they could otherwise not save due to financial restrictions. We did not plan on having foster homes or fostering dogs. Well, as MOST of you know, ONCE A RESCUER, ALWAYS A RESCUER...In addition to the harsh reality of today's economy, the overpopulation of all rescues and animal control facilities and the increase of private individuals looking to re-home their family dog, we just cannot keep up with the demands of trying to stay in operation. We both feel we can better serve our local organizations with our expertise, our love for the breed and our photography. As long term photographers, we both enjoy photographing landscapes, but find ourselves often taking photos of the breed we adore, the majestic White German Shepherd Dog. We are shutting down our current links to purchase dog related items, but we both love the breed so much that we welcome personal requests for certain products and would be willing to donate a portion of our proceeds to other German Shepherd Rescues, the White Shepherd Genetics Project and Lyme Disease Research. We are closing the doors to our organization, but we will always stand beside each other and, with YOU, as a rescuer. APACHE Description

APACHE

APACHE is a purebred White German Shepherd Dog that came into rescue with his two brothers. They had been adopted by a family that was only looking for one dog, but the breeder talked them into taking all three.

Due to extenuating circumstances, they did not get the socialization they needed and became very protective of their territory. Both of his brothers have been rescued, rehabilitated and rehomed.

APACHE has been rehabilitated, but cannot be in a home with small dogs, cats or other small animals. If you are interested APACHE, please contact Southeast German Shepherd Rescue for further information.

JEB Description

JEB

JEB is slated as a purebred White German Shepherd Dog, but he appears to be a WGSD/Husky mix. When JEB was first pulled from Hanover Animal Control in VA, we were told that he was 14 years old. JEB was taken to the vet due to him not using his rear leg and the vet advised that there was NO WAY he was 14 and estimates his age at about 7 or 8. JEB is neutered, up to date on his Rabies, DHLPP, Bordatella and is Heartworm NEGATIVE! He is housebroken, good with other dogs, kids and cats!

Hi, folks. Jeb here. My foster mom and several rescuers are trying to help me out with my bad leg. It hurts and they tell me it might have to be amputated, but I don't really care because I haven't been using it much in the past few months anyway. I still love to go for long walks and would run if my lazy foster mom would let me. It may be some time before you may request the pleasure of my company. I'll probably have surgery, then need some time to heal. Maybe when I heal, we can get together for a walk.

RYKER Description

RYKER

Ryker is a 3 yr old, handsome, energetic White German Shepherd and is in need of a loving forever home. At 96 pounds, Ryker is a large, athletic boy who loves to play fetch and run, get sprayed with the hose, play in water, ride in cars, give kisses, and cuddle as though he were a small lapdog.

Ryker is excellent with kids, but because he is epileptic, he should not live with small children. He takes daily medication to help control seizures, and is otherwise healthy, neutered, house trained, crate trained, heartworm negative and up to date on all vaccinations. He does very well with other dogs, and is okay with cats who dont mind constant and playful chasing. He loves walks and his leash manners are improving, but he is super-strong and has a high prey drive, so hang on tight! Ryker is an affectionate and loyal companion. He has an impressive, intimidating bark when hes feeling protective of you or sees a stranger,...

BIANCA Description

BIANCA

Bianca is a 3 year old female White German Shepherd mix. She might not be the easiest dog to own, but given time, loving attention and plenty of work we think she has the potential to become a great and devoted pet. We don't know her history or why she is the way she is, but she is highly guarded around other dogs and would do best as an only dog in a home. She'll need to be trained with basic obedience but she is willing to learn and earn treats and your praise and affection. Bianca will need to have an experienced owner or someone who is willing to go the extra mile. She weighs 55 pounds but is thin and could stand to put on some weight, and is medium sized. She dreams of finding her forever home soon.We need that special someone to step forward and really rescue a rescue dog. For further information about BIANCA, please contact BARK
OTTO Description

OTTO

Otto is a 50 pound 12 month old, white shepherd husky mix. Otto, originally named Lobo, was relinquished to the Harrisonburg SPCA by an owner who kept him on a chain and apparently did not allow much interaction with anyone in the household. Otto was not house-broken when he came in.He did not know how to play with a ball or know any commands. In the shelter kennel, Otto began snarling and snapping at anyone who came near, but this appears to have been "cage brave," uncertainty about being held in the small space. But because of this behavior, the shelter was scheduled to put him down when a VGSR volunteer saw Otto's potential and asked that they hold off for another day or two. The short story is that Otto was given a temperament test after some "coaching" by the shelter's dog manager. The test was given by the VGSR volunteer and the dog manager. He did well enough on that, with no aggression whatsoever, simply showingignorance, as described above, like peeing on the dog manager's shoe, perhaps a sign that he had already bonded with her! He was then bathed, neutered, given pain medicine and slept most of the way from Harrisonburg to Fredericksburg to an Animal Behaviorist.Otto was re-evaluated and it was discovered that Otto was hit by his human care givers. Otto has started his rehabilitation, and is turning into a wonderful dog. When he first meets humans, he becomes very mouthy and playful. This is a side affect from being chained and interacting with people from the end of a chain. He is slowly learning that this is inappropriate behavior, but it will take some time. Otto is house broken, crate trained, rides well in the car, is learning basic obedience commands, and adjusting to living in a house very nicely. Otto is slow to warm up to strangers (another side affect from being chained), so needs to go to a home that understands this behavior. This will go away in time, if his new forever home is willing to work with him. All of the information and training will be provided to his new owners.Otto is the type of dog that will NOT allow a stranger to come into the house if none of his family is home. SCARLET Description

SCARLET

Scarlet was seen running loose for at least 6 weeks on her own. Folks say she was running scared, no one had been able to catch her. When we caught up with her she was dodging traffic at a busy intersection, lucky for all, she is now safe and seeking a forever home. Scarlet loves people and would be great in a family, or with someone she can devote herself to. She is very loyal and wants to please. She learns commands quickly and enjoys being by your side. Scarlet has got the walk down! great on a leash, housebroken, and learning to be crated. Scarlet is doing well with other dogs, cats and kids. She is still a little shy sometimes, but warms up quickly as she becomes more comfortable in her new environment. Scarlet is a Shepherd Mix, 55 lbs, 1 1/5 years old, all vaccines, spayed and microchipped. If you would like to meet Scarlet, call Rebecca at 704 532 9875.
