On November 14th 2009, four poets representing the city of Ottawa were crowned the champions of the 2009 Canadian Festival of Spoken word in Victoria, British Columbia
Those four poets, Emcee- E (Ian Keteku), OpenSecret (Ikenna Onyegbula), Poetic Speed (Komi Olafimihan) and Brandon Wint come together to create Canada's spoken word super-group, The Recipe; serving you the most ecclectic food for thought.
THE RECIPE consists of award winning, critically acclaimed poets. Since forming in late 2009, the group has toured Canada and Europe extensively. The Recipe is able to harness an uncommonly beautiful amount of strength on stage, while challenging audiences to engage with a vast spectrum of emotions and topics. Members of The Recipe have shared the stage with Amir Suliman, Shihan, and critically acclaimed poet Saul Williams. Members have performed their poetry across the globe and serve audiences an entertaining, insightful dose of poetic food for thought.
IAN KETEKU (Emcee E) was crowned World Slam Poetry champion in 2010, and is able to fuse insightful poetic content with great wit and charm. Having performed all over N. America and Africa, he has also had the opportunity to perform his poetry for the Governor General of Canada on three occasions.
KOMI OLAF (Poetic Speed) is one of Canada's most unique poetic voices, with an immense ability to harness the power of pace, cadence, and rhythm as a spoken word artist. A writer of great quality, whose poetry embraces culturally diverse viewpoints, Komi derives inspiration from his Nigerian roots. He is also a two-time national slam competitor at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word and is on the cutting edge of the art form.
IKENNA ONYEGBULA (OpenSecret) prides himself on his diverse poetic ability. Covering everything from romance to social justice issues, he is able to get into the crux of an ever varying set of circumstances and situations. He is also a three-time member of the Ottawa Slam Team, a two-time national champion, and is presently working on an array of literary endeavors, including a creative work of fiction entitled, Quietus.
BRANDON WINT is a gentle soul who commands the stage in uniquely powerful ways. Brandon's poetry urges listeners to love one another and themselves by uncompromisingly emphasizing the universal forces that unite human kind.
The Recipe are sometimes joined by affiliates including but not limited to: Suhaib Ibn Najeeb, Titi Sonuga, Hodan Ibrahim, Rusty Priske, John Akpata.
A high-octane, passionate and entertaining spoken word performance. Topics such as love, revolution, compassion and politics are all on display.
