Why Grooming is Important
Regular grooming is important, not only to make your pet look better, but also for good health and mental fitness. Most professionals will agree that when a dog is groomed regularly, it is less likely to suffer from mats and tangles, skin problems, ear infections, overgrown toenails, or infestation by external parasites. In addition, dogs are proud animals they know they look their best and really enjoy the praise people give them when they appear perfectly and professionally groomed.
Staff Info
Groomer Ruth:
Let me take a moment to introduce and tell you about myself. I am the mother of two wonderful children, my daughter who is an up and coming flutist and my son who loves sports and drums. I started my career in 1989 at the New York School of Grooming where I became a certified Groomer. My first apprenticeship was with the Poodle Clip Inn where I spent two years perfecting my training. In 1991, I opened the Pooch Palace in Newton, NJ. With great determination, it quickly became a very successful, high volume salon. It remained this way until I sold it in 1996 to move south, I decided the snowy winters were just not for me.
Groomer Ruths was established in 2002 serving the community for the last 7 years. Since I have worked here in NC I have always been affiliated with an animal hospital or two. For my first 4 years in NC, I rotated hospitals and groomed at 3 different clinics, with some wonderful Veterinarians. I take great pride in my work which is why I try to keep current with the ever changing techniques. I am educated in pet nutrition and have also studied pet psychology so that I can provide the best care for your pet in a low stress environment. I treat all my clients pets as if they were my own, and have groomed some since they were puppies. Grooming should be an over all good experience and I have been caught many times spoiling my special guest. I encourage you to maintain a regular grooming schedule, this helps keep your pet happy and healthy.
Stylist Jamie:
I have been married for 11 years and have 4 children and a golden retriever (a 65 pound ball of energy, she keeps us all young), a toy poodle (he thinks hes the boss. I havent told him yet that hes not) a lab mix (shes the wise one), a Siamese cat (he actually is the boss and knows it), and a hermit crab (he stays in his shell a lot. Do you blame him?) Believe it or not we havent pulled our hair out---yet! All of our pets are rescues (except for the Hermit crab. He probably liked the beach better!)
I was born in Olean, New York and moved to North Carolina when I was very young. I lived most of my childhood life in Garner and moved to Wendell 5 years ago. That is when I started working for Groomer Ruth. I started out as a bather and after many wet days, began apprenticing under Ruth to learn the art of pet stylist. I have always loved animals, so being able to work with them every day is a dream career for me. Its a lot like having grand children; I can play with them, spoil them, and then send them home. lol. When you bring your pets to Groomer Ruths Pet Salon you can rest assured your pets are in the hands of caring professionals who are here to work with you and your pets to help bring out the pride in your pack.

Wonderfull!
Groomer Ruth is the absolute best groomer I have ever been to. She is the most knowledgeable about different breeds. She groomed my 3 pomeranians and knew exactly what cut to do for each body style I was very happy when i got them back. Ruth is also a very kind person and knows good customer service. I would recommend her to anyone with a dog or cat.
One of the best!
Groomer Ruth is one in a million, she helped my family get our first shelty. he was perfect match for us and she kept him looking sharp. She knew his special needs and was always careful to make sure he stayed comfortable.
I would highly recommend her to any one looking to have a loving atmosphere for their pet and always have them looking sharp.
Groomer Ruth's pet salon
Ruth is very knowledgeable about grooming by breed standards. I have my first Standard Poodle. She knew how to cut my poodle's hair so when she was done my poodle looked just like the picture in the book on how to groom the “Sport Cut” of a poodle. Poodles have several different cuts and Ruth gave me the exact haircut I wanted for my poodle. Every time I pick him up the haircut is done perfect and I have had several people ask: Who is your Groomer? Which I am glad to tell them it is Groomer Ruth. My poodle loves to go to Groomer Ruth’s and spend the day. When I come to pick him up he is glad to see me but is not in a hurry to leave. If we are at my house and someone said, “you want to go see Groomer Ruth”? He will turn his head to the side and wag his tail (which is perfectly trimmed every time). I would not take my animals anywere else.

Grooming
General
Proper grooming is an important part of pet care. It not only makes your four legged family member look better, but contributes to his or her physical and mental health. Plus who doesn't enjoy looking their best.
Brushing
Brush your pet thoroughly every day. This helps keep their hair in good condition by removing dirt, spreading the natural oils throughout the coat, preventing tangles from forming and keeping the skin clean and free from irritation. If your lucky you will find the itchy spot as well and see them wiggle their foot in appreciation. LOL. Try using treats and praise, go slow and above all make the the experience fun.
Nails
We all ways suggest you take your pet to a professional once a month to trim their nails, we provide nail clipping and ear cleaning for $10. However if you decide to trim them yourself you'll need a clipper designed specifically for the kind of pet you have. Either a scissor or guillotine-style clipper can be used. You should also purchase a small bottle of blood-clotting powder.
How to Cut Your Pet's Nails
1. Have your companion animal sit beside you. Then place
one of his or her paws in your hand and gently pull it
forward. If your pet dislikes being handled this way,
slowly accustom him or her to it by offering treats and
praise.
2. Gradually shorten one nail. Be sure to stop before you
reach the quick, which is the part of the nail that
contains nerves and blood vessels. If you cannot see the
quick clearly, stop cutting just behind the point at
which the nail begins to curve downward.
3. If you cut into the quick, do not panic. Put some clotting
powder on a moist cotton swab and press it firmly against
the nail for several seconds.
4. Repeat the process until all of your pet's nails have been
trimmed.
5. Do not forget to trim the dewclaw, which is located on the
inside of each front leg just above the paw. (Some dogs
do not have dewclaws.)
Ears
Ear care is an important part of grooming. Ear infections can not only be painful, but lead to permanent hearing loss. The signs of a problem with a pet's ears include redness, constant scratching, head shaking and odor.
How to Clean Your Pet's Ears
1. Check your pet's ears twice per month. The skin inside
and on the flaps should be pale pink. If there is a foul odor
and/or any red, brown or black skin, have a veterinarian
examine your pet's ears.
2. Moisten a cotton ball with warm water or a little mineral
oil and use it to clean the opening into the canal and the
flaps. Do not probe too deeply into the canal.
Teeth
Pet's can get cavities and develop periodontal disease, so their teeth should be cleaned with a pet toothpaste at least twice per week. It is best to use a small toothbrush that has soft bristles. Cleanings performed by a veterinarian may also be required.
Bathing
If you don't have time to bathe your pet or don't want to deal with cleaning up afterwards bring him in and we can bathe him for you. If you choose to do it yourself bathe your pet once every two months or as often as needed. Be sure to brush him or her before each bath in order to get all of the mats out of his or her coat.
How to Bathe Your Pet
1. Place a rubber mat in your bathtub, or a towel in your sink,
for secure footing. Then place a cotton ball in each of your
pet's ears to prevent water from entering.
2. Rinse your pet with warm water. Use a spray hose if one is
available, but be sure to keep the nozzle very close to your
pet's body. Never spray him or her in the face.
3. Apply a shampoo designed especially for pets in small
amounts, working from the head to the tail. Be sure to
clean the rectum, between the toes, behind the ears and
under the chin. Try to avoid getting shampoo in your pet's
eyes.
4. Thoroughly rinse your pet with warm water.
5. Dry your pet with a towel and/or hair dryer.
6. Give lots of praise and some treats to help the pet think of
this as a good experience.

Why do dog activites matter? Why promote them? Dog activities matter because they help dogs keep their homes.
When people and dogs do things together it is good news all around. Many of these activities provide the structure that helps people learn to better communicate with their dogs. The dogs have a better opportunity to learn good manners. That makes them easier to live with and less likely to be given up. The activities help people get in touch with one another to share information. That also helps people to learn about dogs, to avoid problems, and to solve them in a healthy way. The activites provide exercise in a fun way that boosts the relationship. The exercise, in turn, reduces boredom. A dog that exercises with its human is less likely to have behavior problems. A wonderful side benefit is that these activities can be a mental boost for humans and dogs alike.
In loving memory of all those loved ones who are no longer with us. You will forever remain in our hearts. The love we shared was a gift from God and a blessing for all you touched.
