Muay Thai is one of the most sought after martial arts/sports today. This amazing martial art which originated from Thailand more than a thousand years ago has since captured the attention and interest of martial arts enthusiasts and fitness fanatics all over the world. It might be quite intimidating for some to try because it’s an intense physical sport in every sense of the word. It demands both high physical and mental endurance because of all the punching, clinching, and kicking involved. Nevertheless, Muay Thai is definitely something worth trying. There are a lot of benefits that you can get in Muay Thai training aside from the obvious self defense application.

Let us share some of them with you.

1. An improved body. Muay Thai training boosts your body's metabolism which makes you burn off unwanted fats and gain muscle. With only a few months of training you can see a much leaner and meaner silhouette of your body. Aside from toning your body, Muay Thai is also effective in boosting your immune system, making you less susceptible to illnesses.

2. Enhanced flexibility. With regular training, your body will become more flexible and conditioned.

3. Increased strength and agility. Regular Muay Thai training helps build your stamina and put your body in good shape. As your body gets exposed to intense routines on a regular basis, your body becomes stronger and more resilient.

4. Enhanced mind and body coordination. Constant Muay Thai training allows your mind and body to connect instantly and effectively as you react to your sparring partner's attacks.

5. Increased mental alertness. Muay Thai is all about strategy so your mind will also be trained to think of new tactics to help you fight and defend yourself from your opponent.

6. Value of sportsmanship and self discipline. Muay Thai is a very competitive sport so you’ll really learn how to control yourself and how to respect others even though they are your opponent.

7. You get to meet and make friends with new people. Muay Thai  training gives you the opportunity to meet and socialise with different kinds of people. This is a brilliant way to boost your self confidence and self esteem as well.

As you can see, Muay Thai really is a great sport to take up. What’s good about it is that it doesn’t only improve the physical body, but the mind as well. So, what are you waiting for?

Goal setting - The importance of gradings

Sports psychology is an underrated and often ignored aspect of martial arts. The fact is that it is often one of the most important areas in determining a person’s potential for advancement and success in their chosen art. Whether you want to compete, train for fun or are serious about personal fitness goals, having a handle on the psychological aspects of learning a martial art can mean the difference between success and failure. The very first step in the process is to sit down and determine what your individual goals are. Goal setting is the process of thinking about what you want to accomplish and establishing realistic expectations of yourself. How well you establish your own personal goals and think about the best way to accomplish these goals will give you the formula for success.

Creating a list of goals is not as simple as one thinks. There is an acronym used to help develop a list of goals that can be used. It is called the S.M.A.R.T. goal acronym. The first part in S.M.A.R.T. goal setting is SPECIFIC. Setting Specific goals is important because it will help narrow down WHAT a person wants and then helps them determine HOW they can accomplish such goals. Often people will set a goal like “I want to get in shape.” Or “I want to be an MMA fighter.” These goals are not nearly specific enough and will not allow any clear path to accomplish anything. Setting a goal that is more specific will allow the person a chance to actually reach goals in a timely an efficient manner. Rather than setting a general goal, break it into realistic and easily attainable accomplishments. A goal of “Getting better at Muay Thai” can be simplified into specific goals like I. Go to Muay Thai class 3 times a week. II. Compete 3 times this year. III. Attend 2 seminars this year. IV. Watch 2 Muay Thai instructional DVD’s. V. Get my Blue grade within a year and a half. All of these are specific, non generalized goals that can be accomplished and will eventually lead you to the ultimate goal of getting better at Muay Thai.

If you look at the grading structure of our programs at Westside Martial Arts, and any martial arts facility for that matter, we already have our own goals set for you, both short and long term. For instance your first 'major' goal is achieving that first grade, eg. YELLOW in Muaythai however, on your way to this goal are the 'minor' goals. The minor goals are to acquire the skills needed for YELLOW grade in order to achieve that 'major' goal. Your responsibility is to set your own goals, or at least, set about achieving the ones already in place.

In our next post we will look at the M in S.M.A.R.T. MEASURABLE.

GOAL SETTING - IS IT MEASURABLE?

A couple of weeks ago we started to tell you the importance of goal setting. We started by introducing the S.M.A.R.T principle with the first aspect being 'SPECIFIC'. Today we will look at 'M'. Make sure your goals are MEASURABLE.

If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it. In the broadest sense, the whole goal statement is a measure for the project; if the goal is accomplished, then it is a success. However, there are usually several short-term or small measurements that can be built into the goal.

Choose a goal with measurable progress, so you can see the change occur. How will you see when you reach your goal? Be specific! “I want to be able to do 100 pushups by June” shows the specific target to be measure. “I want to be a good at pushups” is not as measurable.

Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goals.

Following these steps will make your goal setting much easier, and also much more rewarding. The next step we will discuss next week is 'A', ATTAINABLE.

Until then, keep working toward you current goals!
