A short little fun fact about Shisha History.
Posted on 19 May 2010
Ok as most of you know Shisha was originally smoked in the mid-east. But the other day i was talking with someone whose grown up in Palestine and smoked the original hookahs their entire lives and Im going to share with you the few fun facts i have learned. What most people dont know is that theres two different types of hookah; Fruit and Tobacco. Have any of you ever gone into a hookah bar or smoke shop and seen hookahs taller or practically the same size as you? And the head of the hookah looks like it can fit a whole days worth of tobacco and then some into it? Well that my friends is called a fruit hookah. What you do is not put Shisha into it but actual fruit and fruit slices and then you put the coals directly, usually, on top of it and smoke it that way. Im still not 100% sure on how to work one of these hookahs but it is something i am looking into and will be informing as i find information. The other thing Ive learned is that the Shisha they smoke not more than 20 years ago, if you didnt know this already, was NOT flavored. They use to just put raw Shisha and tobacco into the heads of hookahs and smoke that. It wasnt until some Europeans came over and tried it and decided to put molasses and brown sugar and flavoring into it that it truly became the flavored Shishas that we all smoke today.
Hookah on roof.
In NY in the early 1900s a hookah bar was a place where Immigrants would reconnect with others just arriving and those in the same upward struggle. But mostly a Hookah was something you brought out to appreciate a conversation in your house or in your neighborhood.
To truly appreciate hookah we must look at our surroundings and those we are smoking with to decide its spiritual effects on us. Hookah bars are not the tradition. And with the noise, and with us now not even making our own hookahs; smoking Hookah tobacco has become no better than fast food for some.
And if you look at many of the people you are smoking with regularly you may notice that they are looking tired, tense, and getting more broke and are not connected to their Hookah because they only smoke in these hookah bars.
Smoking hookah is a time to let the sounds of the air pulling up the Shisha and bringing reflections of the day to rise up. Let the hookah and silence help inspire the mind to go deeper. Relax. Let the pressures fade away. Maybe even find some new life and energy by slowing down and believe things will get better if you are going through those rough patches. And most importantly make a hookah and appreciate what you made.

Middle East
Arab world
Bedouin smoking hookah, locally called nargileh, in a coffeehouse in Deir ez-Zor, near the Euphrates River, 1920s.
In the Arab world, people smoke it as part of their culture and traditions. Social smoking is done with a single or double hose, and sometimes even more numerous such as a triple or quadruple hose in the forms of parties or small get-togethers. When the smoker is finished, either the hose is placed back on the table signifying that it is available, or it is handed from one user to the next, folded back on itself so that the mouthpiece is not pointing at the recipient. It has been recorded that the Arabs are the biggest shisha smokers in the World and have the most shisha Cafes.[citation needed]
Most cafés (Arabic: مقهىً, transliteration: maqhah, translation: coffeeshop) in the Middle East offer shishas.[citation needed] Cafés are widespread and are amongst the chief social gathering places in the Arab world (akin to public houses in Britain).[citation needed] Some expatriate Britons arriving in the Middle East adopt shisha cafés to make up for the lack of pubs in the region, especially where prohibition is in place.
United States and Canada

Many who were teens and young adults in the 1960s and 1970s will be familiar with the hookah as a variety of waterpipe used to consume various derivations of marijuana. At parties or small gatherings the hookah hose was passed around with users partaking as they saw fit.
Recently many cities, states and counties have implemented indoor smoking bans. In some jurisdictions, hookah businesses can be exempted from the policies through special permits. Some permits however, have requirements such as the business earning a certain minimum percentage of their revenue from alcohol or tobacco.
In cities with indoor smoking bans, hookah bars have been forced to close or switch to tobacco-free muassel. In many cities though, hookah lounges have been growing in popularity. From the year 2000 to 2004, over 200 new hookah cafes opened for business, most of which are targeted at a young-adult age group, and were particularly near college campuses or cities with large Middle-Eastern communities. This activity continues to grow in popularity within the post-secondary student demographic.
The growth of the internet has also helped grow the popularity of hookah in the United States and Canada. Online discussion boards have been set up to allow hookah smokers or people new to hookah to chat with each other and exchange tips, reviews of tobacco flavours and more. The internet has also spawned online vendors where people can buy all their hookah supplies online, allowing those who do not have easy access to hookah shops to get all of their hookah supplies shipped to their door.
