Escort Training Escort Training Program
HiTech Pilot Cars trains all of our dedicated escorts, using our in-house training program. We require all interested individuals to do a ride along, before accepting them into our escort training program. We teach the basics, before allowing anyone to escort a load. Once basic training is completed, we allow short training loads (with Training Escort drivers), to give real road / load experience. We never stop training, because we never know what can happen during a trip. We try to prepare our escorts how to handle most situations, such as: escort vehicle placement, communications, load hazards, road rage, breakdowns, restricted width / height / weight areas, and how to deal with traffic control, We also train our escorts for top notch customer service.

High Pole High Pole
HiTech Pilot Cars will begin to offer our own high pole escorts for your OVER Height loads in 2012. Currently, we are developing our training program to include high pole for escorts interested in expanding their service abilities. High pole requires constant attention and dedication beyond, what typical over-width and over-weight loads need. We require that an escort has advanced load experience and safety history before considering an escort to train for high pole loads.Until then, we will refer you to a high pole we trust with our loads.

HiTech Pilot Cars offers service for Super Loads, Day or Night moves. The bigger the load, the more we like it. Super Loads present more challenges. For the escort who has trained to deal with them, it is the opportunity to use their and hone their skills.

Dodge Dakota

HiTech Pilot Cars started with one Dodge Dakota. That Dakota was the inspiration for the company Dakota logo, pictured above. It was made into a clipart image when it was new. The Dakota is still making trips on a limited basis. It is now a reserve unit, when a high pole or load support is needed that most pilot cars can't provide.It is equipped with an extensive traffic warning system, computer w/ GPS, jacks, tools, cones and barriers. It has seen most of the states east of the Mississippi River, down to Florida. It is now sharing the workload with a pair of Chrysler PT Cruisers.HiTech is a big fan of Mopar and will continue to run Dodge and Chryslers as long as possible.
HiTech Pilot Cars was established in January of 2006.After many years working for an established escort company, Greg "HiTech" Harvey moved to Martinsburg, WV. There he started a pilot car company out of necessity. He needed a job and OVERSIZE Load drivers needed a good escort company in the area. HiTech first started working for a few local companies as an independent escort. Several long trips and a few short pays later, Greg decided it was time to start his own company,HiTech Pilot Cars was born. Observing the lack of training of the other escorts he was working with, Greg decided it was time to start training escorts to provide the level of service, that few companies would offer. Still providing that quality of service, into the future.

Recent Challenge

Our latest challenge was Cat 777D Dump trucks on West Virginias twisty 2 lane mountainous roads at 4:30 AM on a Sunday. They were going from a jobsite near Charlestown, WV to new site in Mt. Storm, WV. They were 18' wide (enough to fit two cars side by side the the bed) in a typical road lane of 12'. There wasn't much of a shoulder for most of the trip. Several hairpin turns, steep mountains and rock face just inches from the fogline. Virginia State Police provided (2) cruisers to assist thru the short section of 4 lane in Virginia. We were on our own in West Virginia, when we encountered fog so thick, visibility was limited to less than 100 feet. As you would expect, there was no place wide enough to stop.

We are often contracted by a trucking company that haul Navy CH-47 Helicopter flight simulators to and from the Naval Air Station (NAS) at Pax River in Lexington Park, MD. to other military bases and even Disney World in Orlando, Fla.We also have a customer who supplies roof trusses and wall panels. We have escorted to Quantico Marine Base, Va., Ft Belvoir, Va., Ft. Eustice Va., for a Marine Corps mess hall.We even escort Satellites from the manufacturer to the airport to be headed to the point of launch to the wild blue yonder.Of course we have also escorted mobile and modular homes, sheds, steel structures, yachts, windmill generators and towers.
