The Story of the Star began on May 2, 1949, when construction of the Star began by Mr. A.V. Lutrell, who owned the Strand theater also located in Russell Springs. The building now stands over the location of the old Post Office and the Blue Grill. Originally to be called ‘the Russell’ the name was changed to the Star. On February 28, 1950 at 6:00 the Star opened with the motion picture Mrs. Mike starring Dick Powell and Evelyn Keys. The building originally had a bowl-shaped floor and could seat 510. The building served as a movie theater for three decades before closing its doors. During the years after it closed, the building served as a variety of businesses, including furniture stores, clothing stores, a restaurant and a disco, but nothing ever occupied the building for long. In 1984, a group of Russell Countians that were enthusiastic about the arts applied for and received a New Communities Challenge Grant from the Kentucky Arts Council.The initial goal of the organization was to stimulate cultural enrichment and growth through exposure to drama, music, fine art and literature. The original venue of the Arts Council was the Old Liberty Play House that was replaced by the Star Theater. Then in 1988, during a period where the structure stood vacant, the mayor of Russell Springs asked the Russell County Arts Council to help plan an event for the city’s centennial. The council staged a special event in the old Star Theater called ‘the Old Town Museum’.It was during the festival that Dr. Roger Grider called to inform that he was very interested in contributing a sum of money to a worthy cause in Russell County. His gift of $50,000 was used to purchase the building and the remaining money went toward the renovation. In July 1994, after several years of planning and extensive remodeling the Star held its Grand Opening as a performing arts theater. Since opening the remodeled Star Theater in July 1994, the Russell County Arts Council has staged over a hundred productions ranging from major plays to dance and musical performances, from performances by the Lake Cumberland Choral Society to gospel singings, to magic shows and even a dulcimer concert. Country music superstar Steve Wariner, who grew up in Russell Springs, has performed to sellout crowds. In addition to providing a "professional" venue for students enrolled in Russell County High School's drama classes, the theater has been used for programs involving the community's School Safety Programs.An innovative series of plays performed by casts consisting entirely of children in all roles has given local and area youth a significant stage and performing experience. Many of these have gone on to perform with the theater in adult roles, and several have advanced into drama programs at major universities.Additionally, the Star Theater and its annex building, the Norfleet Gallery, have been used to focus on other artistic endeavors. An annual Arts & Crafts festival is held in November, allowing regional writers, artists and craftspersons opportunities to display and sell their works. The smaller Gallery inside the Star Theater usually features displays of local and regional art, photographs, quilting and more during the performance runs of major productions.Major musical productions have included several annual performances of The Nutcracker ballet, plus major Broadway shows such as Annie, Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music and others. Dramas and comedic plays featuring casts of up to 60 persons have included classics such as Frankenstein, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, The Odd Couple, Oliver Twist, The Secret Garden, Tom Sawyer and others. Contemporary plays have included Beauty & The Beast, Faith County, Here Come The Brides, Lizzie Borden, Night Mother, Rumors, Steel Magnolias, Ten Little Indians, Twelve Angry People and others. Several original plays have been performed in recent years as well.

Ticket prices for performances at the Star remain very affordable, one of the best live entertainment values anywhere. Most performances remain well under $10 per seat, with some productions offering reduced price deals. There are occasionally events with free admission as well. The Star's Box Office opens approximately one hour before each scheduled event.Advance tickets for the current event can be may be purchased at Grider Drugs on Main Street in Russell Springs, located directly across the street from the Star Theater. (Advance tickets may not be available until the final week to ten days before the event.)The Box Office can arrange to hold tickets for pickup. If you wish to have tickets held, please call 270-866-STAR(7827) and leave your name and telephone number, and note which performance you wish to attend. Tickets will be held for you at the Box Office window for the date of the performance. IMPORTANT: You must pick up the tickets at least 10 minutes before show time. Unpaid tickets not picked up will go on sale to the public at 10 minutes prior to showtime.Ticket prices for Plays are $7 for Adults and $4 for Children 12 and Under. Admission to Musicals is $10 for Adults and and $5 for Children 12 and Under . Tickets are non-refundable.The Star Theater is handicapped accessible, and can provide seating space for wheelchairs. It is helpful to let us know ahead of time which performance you wish to attend.

HERE'S HOW TO FIND US

Russell Springs is located in southern Kentucky on the west end of huge Lake Cumberland. Following are directions to the theater once you arrive at the city.From the east (Somerset): Take the Russell Springs exit off the Cumberland Parkway, turn LEFT at the junction with US-127. At the first stoplight (Arby's), turn LEFT onto Maple Street (KY-619). Follow that road across the four-way stop until you come to a T-intersection with Main Street (KY-379). Turn LEFT there, the theater is just ahead on the left.From the west (Columbia): If coming by the Cumberland Parkway, take the Russell Springs exit, then turn RIGHT onto US-127. At the first stoplight (Arby's), turn LEFT onto Maple Street (KY-619). Follow that road across the four-way stop until you come to a T-intersection with Main Street (KY-379). Turn LEFT there, the theater is just ahead on the left.If coming by KY-80, shortly after entering the Russell Springs city limit, you will pass a water tower on your right. When the road splits at a Y intersection, take the right angle. Proceed a block to the stoplight. That is Main Street, where you turn LEFT. The Star is just ahead on your right.From the north (Liberty): Heading south on US-127, at the first stoplight in Russell Springs, turn RIGHT onto KY-80. Follow that road past the Shell station and down the slight hill. At the small traffic turn lane, turn LEFT onto Main Street (KY-379). Follow Main Street a short distance until you pass the post office and are in the business district. The Star Theater is just ahead on your left.From the south (Jamestown): Heading north on US-127 in Russell Springs, after you pass Russell County High School on your right, you will come to a traffic island. Turn LEFT there onto Lakeway Drive (KY-430). Follow Lakeway Drive across the Cumberland Parkway. At the Y intersection, keep going straight (the left angle). Around the following curve to the left, proceed to the stoplight. That is Main Street, where you turn RIGHT. The Star is just ahead on your right.Parking in Russell Springs is free. You may park in any marked spot on Main Street. You may also find free parking in the lot behind the bank located beside the Star Theater. Parking behind the theater itself is usually taken up by cast and crew.
