Hillary LaVoie

Mission Statement

The Hillary LaVoie Effort was established by the friends and family of Hillary LaVoie for the purpose of promoting safe teen driving. The two main focuses of the effort are seatbelt usage and avoiding all distractions while driving, especially cell-phone usage. The Hillary LaVoie Effort will be lobbying the Nevada legislature to make seatbelt usage a primary offense. Currently Nevada law requires all vehicle occupants to wear their seatbelts when driving on public roadways. Nevada’s law is a secondary enforcement law meaning that a vehicle cannot be stopped and cited solely for the occupants not wearing a seat belt; an offense other than failure to wear a seat belt is necessary to stop the vehicle. In the United States, approximately 2,700 teenagers are killed each year from injuries caused by auto crashes, over 60% of those deaths occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. Seat belt usage greatly increases the chances of surviving a crash and escaping serious injury. Each year, vehicle crashes cause about 41,000 fatalities and 3.4 million injuries. If every front seat occupant buckles up, another 9,500 deaths and 200,000 injuries could be prevented. The Hillary LaVoie Effort will continue to promote safe teen driving through education, legislation, and promoting the “pledge” that every passenger will “CLICK-IT 4 HILL” every time they enter a motor vehicle.
