Carly Jo has been singing since before she could talk, but didn't take to the stage until she joined The Pop Shop, a Central Florida-based performing arts school, in 2005. She was given a guitar in 2009, which opened up the world of songwriting. She had lyrics in her head that she could finally put to music. Her first EP was written during an emotional period of her life and the five songs allow the listener to get a glimpse into her diary, from the first song, Just Another Game, which captures that time in some relationships when you are trying to make things work but they continue to deteriorate, to This is Goodbye, the break-up song, which is an ultimate girl-done-wrong anthem.
Singer/songwriter Dave Mallon frequents local coffee shops, providing them hours of great original music. Dave has been a long time friend of mine, so I saw it only fitting that we sit down for an interview while I was visiting my home town in rual Pennsylvania. The setting - Warm Hearts Cafe, Mechanicsburg.
Dave tells us about how his music has evloved over the years, where he finds inspiration (yes even a folkster like himself gets inspired through hip hop) and where he will be taking his music in the future.
Kenny and Colin are brothers. Morgan and Danny might as well be. They all joined up with one huge common interest, rock and roll music. Coming from two separate bands, the four merged in September 2010. With a full arsenal of songs written by Kenny and Morgans varied pasts, Danny and Colin round out the rythyms and fill in the gaps to bring sweet music to everyones ears. Both Kenny and Morgan switch off on lead vocals, keeping the listener guessing what will happen next, while Colin provides harmonies to back up their flowing melodies.
Now residing in Orlando, FL, the Soul Birds frequently perform their powerful show all over Central Florida, from Tampa to Cocoa and more. Their mindset is pure DIY. From merch to recording, all four members actively design and create products for their fans. And they are currently in the process of recording a full length album using a barebones set-up, aiming for a classic, vintage sound.
Since 2007, Greenland is Melting have put their own spin on folk, bluegrass and punk; penning an original sound with straightforward, hometown lyrics. Armed with a banjo, acoustic guitar, standup bass, a suitcase bass drum, and a slew of other instruments in tow, the Greenland boys break the typecast we all know as the "Gainesville sound" and bring a breath of fresh, folk-induced air to the masses.
Karl, Shaun, and Will have always approached their music with a drive and direction that perpetuates real, honest experiences put into porch-driven sing-along's. This especially rang true with the Paper + Plastick debut, “Our Hearts are Gold, Our Grass is Blue,” recorded by Gainesville’s own Rob McGregor (Against Me, Whiskey & Co., Hot Water Music) in their swampy home of Gainesville, FL. Following the release, the band hit the road with extensive east coast touring and found an ever growing audience to woo with their earnest dedication and alluring three-part harmonies. The countless stories and experiences that the trio gained has paved the way for a strong, new year for the band.
The beginning of 2011 has already seen the release of their new EP, “Folk Songs from Florida: Volume One” and the “Greenland is Melting/Jon Gaunt Split 7”,” both through Paper + Plastick Records; and the band has no plans to stop. Keep an eye out for another full length sometime this fall!
Johnny Knuckles sounds as good as a cold PBR in a hot venue is refreshing. He is 100% pure blues, 100% original. It was fitting that during his song "Second Chances" the power would go out - just anoher day in a blue artists' life right? It didn't stop Johnny. Rather it energized his performace as he didn't skip a beat and finished his song acoustic style, igniting the crowd.
The Kevin Maines Band is pursuing the next step in Soul/Heavy Blues. With the release of American Hustle, the first full length album by Kevin Maines, Todd Warsing, and David Marder, the band draws tones from Soul and Rock's golden years and is taking the next step in roots music. Drawing influence from artists like Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Anthony Jackson, Bernard Purdie, Hank Garland, The Allman Brothers, The Black Keys and Ray Lamontagne, the band aims to lay down heavy grooves to move to and even heavier vocals to sing to. It's the Sweet and the Gritty.
Emily Kopp is a 20 year old soul/pop/acoustic/singer-songwriter (yes, all of those!) based out of Orlando, FL. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Emily moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL at the tender age of two. It was there where she began singing, playing guitar, and even the drum-kit. Her soulful voice is reminiscent of musicians such as Norah Jones, Adele, & Corinne Bailey Rae. Her catchy melodic phrases and life inspired lyrics are truly unique. Upon high school graduation, Emily began playing “cover” coffee shop type gigs at wine bars throughout South Florida (her hometown), as well as restaurants and cafe’s in Orlando (where she began College).
Robbie Hazen’s music is buoyant and self-assured. His high, unique vocals and incredibly entertaining live performance have garnered praise and accolades across the United States. His musical career started in high school, where he wrote and performed locally at festivals and venues while honing his guitar skills on weekends at his local church. He cut a demo that landed into the hands of two-time Grammy award winning engineer/producer Freddy Pinero, Jr., who produced Robbie’s debut EP entitled “Remedy.” Due to his constant performance (he has played several hundred gigs at colleges and venues across the country over the past four years) and rigorous schedule, Robbie’s musical abilities have developed, matured, and flourished throughout his college career at Notre Dame.
In the winter of 2008, Robbie went into the studio with acclaimed engineer/producer Duane Lundy and recorded songs for his second effort entitled “Come to Life.” His graduation in May of 2008 marks the beginning of a new stage in his musical and professional life. With a recently-acquired college degree in one hand, and a new record awaiting release in the other, Robbie Hazen is on the cusp of mainstream success.
The Orlando based Mumpsy create a pop incarnation of eclectic influences ranging from punk bands to ‘50’s crooners and beyond. Releasing six albums and a handful of b-sides since 2005, Mumpsy started as a musical project fronted by singer-songwriter Jeff Ilgenfritz and quickly caught on like a wildfire in the surrounding Central Florida area. Now a full-fledged band, Mumpsy has logged 10 tours, 4 releases, and 8 music videos in the past 2 years.
When LMNC sets out to interview bands and musicians, our goal is to gain a deeper understanding of their music, their success, their hurdles, their goals, etc. in the only way we know how - through their perspective. As such, we ask questions that only the musicians themselves can answer. Revealing interviews are coupled with live performances to bring you, the fan, a unique experience.
Ok, you listened to their music, you heard their interviews - now, you want to see them live. Snip-its of interviews are merged with live performaces, here in the video section. Make sure to click on the "more videos" button to see a complete list of videos we produced.
We're currently working on our vintage clothing line. Check back often and watch for the product launch announcement on Twitter.
