I am a new theatre designer/maker with aspirations.I always try to experience new challenges and gain new skills in different areas of the art world. I love to learn.I find inspiration from any encounter, this keeps me alive and content.I will always endeavour to build my own individual style and discover my own character via my work, and this development is constant.I like to design and make real objects, and let others experience my creations and my process, to realise my vision and share it. There's no better satisfaction in life. I learn. I respond. I create.

Carmen.
This was an independent university project where I designed and made a complete costume for the character of Carmen, from Bizet's opera set in 1830s Seville. My design takes inspiration from the traditions of Spain, the bullfight and flamenco, and Carmen's sexual power and charm. She is the ultimate coquette, a tragic femme fatale.I learnt how to draft patterns from a model's measurements, on paper and on the stand, and how to adapt them for a particular design. I made toiles of each garment to fit on the model and modified the patterns where necessary. I chose the fabrics, a variety of silks, cottons and synthetics, and used a combination of domestic and industrial sewing machines, as well as hand-sewing techniques to complete each garment. The garments consist of: a fully steel-boned corset, a fish-tail skirt, and a tailored bolero jacket with embellishment. Please click on the images to see more details of my designs, and photographs shot on location.

Groom's Waistcoat.
This was an independent project for a personal client, whilst in my final year at university. The job was to make a double-breasted waistcoat with lapels, for a groom to wear on their wedding day. The design was adapted from a pattern to meet the client's desires and measurements. The waistcoat was made of cotton drill, with hair canvas interface and silk dupion lining. This experience taught me certain tailoring techniques, how to use interfacing, make pockets, and sew buttonholes. Please click on the images to see more details of the garment and the bride and groom on their wedding day.

The Tiger-Skin Rug.
This was an independent university project in collaboration with a local infant school. It was a combination of my passion for animals, in particular the tiger, my interest in education and my design talent. My inspiration came from The Tiger-Skin Rug, a children's story by Gerald Rose, about an old, hungry tiger who pretends to be a tiger-skin rug in a palace in order to eat the scraps of food.I led workshops in creative writing, and felt making for a class of children aged 6.I then used the children's work to aid the design and construction of a puppet and a performance to show in the school for the whole year group. My aim was to make the children aware of the peril of tigers in the wild.In this process I learnt how to make felt and also taught others to make it. I also learnt how to use a potential audience as research and also as a partner in the entire creative process, whether it's their input into the puppet, or their development of the tiger's character and life story. Please click on the images to see more details of the puppet and the performance. Take a look at the Community Art page on the right menu for photographs of the felt workshops.

Winter Solstice.
On a work placement I went to several primary schools and a local museum with community artists, to work as a craft assistant. We made lanterns out of a combination of wire, withy and tissue paper. The lanterns were lit to mark the Winter Solstice Festival, an event at Ilkeston Museum by Erewash Borough Council.
