My Vision
I have a vision. A vision of a different world. A symposium of color, a magnified and distorted view-one that is either warped and twisted or simple and pure. This is the world inside a water drop. With patience, time, persistence and hard-work, I have captured water's ability to reflect, refract, and magnify as well as distort. The result is a prismatic conglomeration of color and light, as fresh and exhilarating as an unexpected drop of rain to the face.
An Artist's Perspective
I have always been fascinated by art. I remember chasing butterflies as a child and hoping that they would land long enough for me to capture their beauty (at that time, through pencil and paper). Despite that fact, I didn't consider making art my career until I was 18. After transferring to Renaissance Academy in my senior year, my passion for art was reinvigorated. I took an oil painting class under the direction of David Knoecklin outside of school and was enthralled. From there I moved on to acrylic until I found my favorite tangible medium: pen-and-ink. After composing a substantial collection of work, I decided it was time to photograph my pieces to send them to potential galleries. I always thought that photography was as simple and easy as pointing and clicking, but I soon learned that nothing could be further from the truth. Minor creases in the paper were magnified and darkened by shadows that the camera (to my perturbation) captured. The lighting in the room, the angle of the camera, and the placement of the work-all of these had to be perfect! Photography was time-consuming, fastidious, and fussy, like a stubborn rose that refused to bloom. Of course, I fell in love, and I nourished that rose with a cornucopia of nutrients and a deluge of water until it bloomed more brightly than ever! The result is "Drip," my beloved collection of macro shots of water.
"Folded" and "Painted with Light "
After working on "Drip", I completed the series "Folded" and "Painted with Light." I collected magazines to use for collages. I had stopped using them and had no idea what to do with them all. I turned this trash into treasure by literally turning it into trash again. I noticed that crumpled, folded magazine pages created breathtaking effects. Not all the pictures in "Folded" are literally folded. Some are distorted by the camera angle and/or the lighting, while others are extreme macros that only show a tiny part of the original add. The key here is that the emotions are folded because the person depicted in each photograph is morphed from a flawless, emotionless facade into a pained and confused yet exonerated being. Every model is exposed for what they truly feel inside, and this beauty is turned into ugliness and then into beauty again by exposing the ugly truth. The mere act of this exposure is freedom from beauty, and this freedom is beautiful in itself!
Accomplisments and Goals
I have had my work listed in Zafka Studios and the Marsh Rabbit Gallery in Jensen Beach. I was the winner of best photograph by a professional at the Fort Pierce Society's annual Orchid show in October of 09. I also won 1st place at the St. Lucie County Fair's 2010 Artist Exhibition for my photograph "Faraway Thoughts" and second place for my photograph "Pelican's Landing." My photograph "Baby Blue Eyes" was one out of thousands selected to be published in Boulevard of Photographers "Best of 2009 Photography" anthology. I am also a member of the Treasure Coast Artists' Association and have had my work listed in their gallery. I displayed my work in the Mad Hatters Art Festival in Nov. of 09 and my work was featured in the 2010 Sony World Photography Awards. I am currenlty an honor roll student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh going for my bachelors in Photography, and am looking for publishers for my series "Drip."
