Welcome everyone to the new Hampton Supertrack website. As with everything else this year we are trying to get a fresh start all the way around. New sanction, new track, new Board of Directors, new website, all fresh, all exciting. This year should present our racers and parents with some awesome times together. We are putting together our 2010 schedule as of this posting and have plans to release it by January 8th.
Some of our plans include a complete rebuild of the track (mid-January), Saturday night racing on a regular basis, a Hampton Supertrack Summer Series and larger than ever Eddie Townsend Memorial Pro-AM. With the help of all of you and a little help from Mother Nature this should be an awesome 2010. See you all at the soon!
YEAR END UPDATE
The 2009 season has finally come to an end and boy did we have our share of rain. It was a shame we didn't get to run our 10th Annual Mr. D Memorial race a scheduled but it was nice to be able to honor Mr. D at our annual year end banquet. A wonderful time was had by all and everyone who helped to make this event happen deserves a huge "Thank You" from all of us. Then everyone turned right around and put on one heck of a showing for the Hampton Holly Days Parade. Way to many Elvis' , having way to much fun. Thanks again to everyone who participated in building the float and riding in the parade. Maybe next year it will be a tad warmer.
The 2010 season is shaping up to be full of new ideas and new beginnings for us here at HST. We are extremely proud to welcome the ABA into the state of Virginia and to our track. With all the ABA's help and innovative ideas being persued by the new board this season is sure to be one to remember.
Till then race hard & have fun!
WHAT IS BMX?
About Hampton Supertrack
BMX is Bicycle Motocross. It was started in California in the early 1970's by some kids who wanted to emulate motorcycle motocross racing. There are now hundreds of tracks across the country and around the world and BMX racing made its debut as a full medal sport in the 2008 Summer Olympic Games!
BMX race tracks are usually around 1000 feet long and consist of banked turns (berms) and jumps. Most of the track is dirt but berms on some of the tracks are paved.
Each race consist of three qualifying races called motos. The overall winner for the day is determined by their moto finishes. In some cases where there are enough riders, there may be a final race called a "main event". This race is "winner takes all", where your finishing position in the main is your overall finish for the event regardless of your moto finishes.
There are three levels of proficiency in the amateur ranks, novice (beginner), intermediate, & expert. Races are determined by the age and proficiency of the riders. For example: a brand new 13 year old rider would compete in the 13 novice class, racing only against other novice 13 year olds. That rider would then move up in proficiency to intermediate either after they have won a certain amount of races as a novice or voluntarily if they wish to race at the next level. The same applies when moving from intermediate to expert.
START RACING >>
What do you need to get started? A bike and helmet. The helmet needs to be the 'full face' kind that protects your mouth and chin.
Equipment: Most bikes can be used for competition as long as they are in mechanically safe working condition. No kickstand, chainguard, reflectors, freestyle pegs or other protruding dangerous equipment can be attached. Bicycles for class competition must have no more than 20 wheel diameters. Bicycles with 12, 16 & 18 wheel diameters are therefore allowable. Bicycles for cruiser competition must have no less than a 24 wheel diameter. Bicycles with a 26 wheel diameter or larger are therefore allowable. Helmets only have to have a permanent strap and shorts and short sleeve shirts are allowed with proper extra pads.
Clothing: ABA rules require close toed shoes, long pants and long sleeves. Sneakers, jeans and any long sleeve shirt or jacket are fine. A full-face helmet is required and a pair of gloves is also a good idea. A helmet is required at all times when riding on the track!
ABA Membership: A one year membership is $45.00 ($30.00 for a 30 day trial membership - convert to full for $15.00), and includes insurance while on the track, access to any ABA track in the US, and a subscription to BMXer. You must be a member of the ABA to race or participate in gate practices or other ABA sactioned events at Hampton Supertrack.
Race fees: There's a $10.00 entry fee for races and $2.00 fee for scheduled gate practices. Stop in and speak to a track representative to see about becoming a BMX racer. Ask about family rates.
Hampton Supertrack is an ABA sanctioned track. This means that the track is approved by the American Bicycle Association, of which Hampton Supertrack is a member track. The ABA sets up the rules of racing and conduct on the track. Anyone who races on a ABA track must be a member (or trial member) of the ABA. This binds the racer to the safety and conduct standards of the ABA and also provides the rider with insurance coverage while racing. Most of all though, BMX is fun! Ages run from the 5 and under class to the 55 and older class! Generally, boys race boys and girls race girls, but sometimes they are combined if the number of racers is small.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS HAMPTON SUPERTRACK?
Hampton Supertrack is an ABA sanctioned BMX track located in Gosnold's Hope Park in Hampton, Virginia. Although Gosnold's is a city park, HST is not funded or maintained by the City of Hampton or the Hampton Parks and Recreation Department. Hampton BMX Parents Association is a 501(c) non-profit organization that leases the property that the track is on from the city and runs the BMX program and maintains the track on a strictly volunteer basis. The parents association consists of BMX riders, family members and friends of Hampton Supertrack. The track board of directors is elected by the members of the association for a two year term during odd years at our annual banquet in December.
Our program is only as strong as our volunteers. We extend an open invitation to all of you to get involved at some level. There are jobs that are strictly race day jobs and others that require much more involvement. Whether you simply volunteer on race day or even just help to clean up after a race, we need you. Being part of a character building sport such as BMX is a very rewarding experience. At HST it is all about investing in our youth. Sooner or later you will find that, not only do kids grow and learn to be good children, parents grow and learn to be good parents.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SANCTIONED BY THE ABA?
This means that the track is approved by the American Bicycle Association, of which Hampton Supertrack is a member track. The ABA sets up the rules of racing and conduct on the track. Anyone who races on a ABA track or participates in ABA sponsored events at the track must be a member (or trial member) of the ABA. This binds the racer to the safety and conduct standards of the ABA and also provides the rider with insurance coverage while racing.
I'M NOT AN ABA MEMBER, CAN I STILL RIDE THE TRACK?
The mission of the parents association is to promote the sport of BMX to the City of Hampton and the region and to provide a place where riders and their families can participate in the sport of BMX in a safe, positive environment. Our goal is not only to build great bmx riders, but to encourage and develop great character as well. As a result, the track is open to the public as long as there is not an ABA sanctioned event (such as a race, gate practice, lock-in or other event), maintenance, or the track is wet or muddy.
1. No motorized vehicles on the track.
2. Helmets must be worn at all times (long pants and long sleeves are highly encouraged).
3. Do not ride in a reverse direction on the track.
4. Remove all pegs, reflectors and chain guards (these damage the track and can be hazardous to other riders).
5. The track is no place for foul language, fighting, littering, or vandalism. Take care of your track!
