Garen S. Wolff, founder of OfficialCityPrep was selected by Essence Magazine to receive their Powerful Woman award. She and the mentoring program are featured in the June 2010 issue.

Ebony Magazine & Pine Sol 2009 Unsung Hero Award

Powerful Difference sponsored by Pine Sol and Ebony Magazine, was started in January 2007 to celebrate the power of ordinary women to affect extraordinary change. The program honors women from communities across the country. Garen S. Wolff, along with 4 other Detroit honorees, are featured in the October '09 issue.

OfficialCityPrep™ was founded in 2001 by Garen S. Wolff while a sophomore at Detroit Country Day High School. Garen was motivated by the requests of parents to mentor their daughters, and her own experiences in middle school. She asked some of her friends to help, then designed a program which was dedicated to helping African American girls improve their performance on standardized tests in addition to dealing with academic and social pressures. The program pairs girls in grades 6-8 with junior and senior high girls. In June, 2003 after an overwhelming demand the program changed its target population to include middle school girls of all races, cultures and nationalities. And, in August, of 2003 Garen was cited for her outstanding commitment to community service and received a Proclamation from the Detroit City Council for her work with CityPrep™.

Garen Wolff was one of 10 high school seniors in the country named as a recipient of the for her efforts with the CityPrep Mentoring Program. Miss Wolff participated in s 4 day intensive leadership training program taught by national business and political leaders. Following the training was honored honored at a luncheon/awards ceremony at the prestigious National Press Club.

2003 Midwest Scholarship WinnerVolunteer recognition program recognizes the efforts of young people who contribute in special ways to their local communities. 3 Classes of Competition

TIPS TO SPELL CORRECTLY

Class II.

Students in this class compete in TEAMS. OfficialCityPrep pioneered the use of TEAMS in spelling bees. Students in grades first through thir compete in TEAMS.Our goal here is to help young learners to have fun, experience new words, while participating in a challenging contest.
Students in this class compete as individuals. They must be in Grades 4-8.
Students in this class compete as individuals. They must be in Grades 6-8.
1. Write the word neatly and clearly.2. Close your eyes and visualize the word in your mind.3. Spell the word aloud.4. Study the syllables if the word has more than one.5. Pronounce the word aloud.6. Study its meaning; it may have more than one.7. Make up a sentence with the word.8. Use the word at every opportunity in writing and talking.

Class I Rules

Class I.-TEAM

QUESTIONS

1) Students in this class must compete in teams of three. Report cards are required for verification of each student's grade. There are no exceptions to this rule.2) A team can consist of any combination of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders. The team can be all girls, boys, or co-ed. OfficialCityPrep is not responsible for forming teams.3) Students participating on a team must rotate at each round.4) Teams are allowed to miss one word in two rounds before they are eliminated from the contest. The misses need not be constructive; they can occur in any round.5) If a student cannot spell a word when it is his turn, he will be allowed 15 seconds to confer with his teammates. At that time they can tell him how to spell the word; but it is his responsibility to go back to the podium and spell the word correctly. -No other team member will be allowed to spell the word for the student. - Students cannot refer to a spelling list, or consult with relatives and friends outside of their immedate teammates.6) Words for this class will be primarily homonyms, BUT WILL NOT BE LIMITED to that genre. Class I competitors are encouraged to study as many word lists as possible to be successful.7) Class I. students should interact with the pronouncer as much as possible to obtain the word that the pronouncer is looking for
